🖥️ How to Easily Claim Your Website on Pinterest (Even If You’re Not Tech-Savvy!)
If you’ve ever tried to follow Pinterest’s official help article to claim your website and felt completely lost — you’re not alone! 😵💫
Pinterest gives you options like “add a meta tag,” “upload an HTML file,” or “update your DNS,” but for most bloggers and website owners, that’s a whole lot of gibberish.
This guide breaks it all down — in plain English — for WordPress and non-WordPress sites alike.

🔍 What Does It Mean to “Claim” Your Website on Pinterest?
Claiming your site:
✅ Proves your content belongs to you
📊 Unlocks analytics for pins from your site
📌 Displays your site name on your pins
💡 Improves your Pinterest visibility and branding

🛠️ How to Claim Your Website on Pinterest (for All Site Types)

🔴 Start on Pinterest
- Log into your Pinterest Business account.
- Go to Settings > Claim.
- Enter your website URL and click Claim.
- Choose your preferred method:
- HTML Tag (recommended for most sites)
- Upload HTML File
- TXT Record (DNS verification)
🟦 OPTION 1: HTML TAG METHOD (Best for most sites)
Pinterest gives you a code that looks like this:
<meta name="p:domain_verify" content="random-string-of-characters" />
Keep this tab open or paste it in a temporary document — you’ll need it in the next step.
✅ For WordPress Users
Paste the Meta Tag in Your WordPress Header
There are 3 common ways to do this:
1: Use a WordPress SEO Plugin (like Rank Math or Yoast)
Rank Math
- Go to your WordPress dashboard > Rank Math > General Settings > Webmaster Tools.
- Paste the code into the Pinterest Verification Code box (just the content part).
- Save changes!
Yoast SEO
- WordPress dashboard > SEO > General > Webmaster Tools.
- Paste the code into the Pinterest box (again, just the content string).
- Save!
2. Use a Header & Footer Plugin
If you’re not using a SEO plugin:
- Install the Insert Headers and Footers plugin.
- Go to Settings > Insert Headers and Footers.
- Paste the full meta tag code into the Header box.
- Save your changes.
3: Add Manually to Your Theme (Advanced)
If you’re comfortable editing code:
- Go to Appearance > Theme File Editor.
- Find the
header.php
file. - Paste the meta tag just before the
</head>
tag. - Click Update File.
⚠️ Not recommended unless you know what you’re doing — a small mistake here can break your site.
✅ For Non-WordPress Sites
This will depend on your website platform. Here’s how to do it on the most popular ones:
🔹 Wix
- Go to your Wix dashboard > Settings > Custom Code.
- Click + Add Custom Code.
- Paste the Pinterest HTML tag.
- Choose Place Code in HEAD.
- Save & publish!
🔹 Squarespace
- Go to Settings > Advanced > Code Injection.
- In the Header section, paste the Pinterest meta tag.
- Save your changes.
🔹 Weebly
- Go to the Settings tab.
- Click SEO.
- Paste the Pinterest meta tag in the Header Code box.
- Save and publish.
🔹 Shopify
- From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Themes.
- Click Actions > Edit Code.
- Open your
theme.liquid
file. - Paste the Pinterest meta tag just before
</head>
. - Save.
🧠 If you’re using a custom HTML site:
- Open your site’s
index.html
file (or the main page template). - Paste the Pinterest meta tag inside the
<head>
section. - Save and re-upload your file to your host.
🟨 OPTION 2: HTML FILE UPLOAD METHOD
Pinterest gives you a small file to upload to your website’s root directory (your home folder on your server).
This is great for custom-coded sites or cPanel users.
- Download the HTML file Pinterest gives you.
- Log into your hosting panel (like Bluehost, SiteGround, etc.).
- Open the File Manager and navigate to the public_html or root directory.
- Upload the HTML file.
- Go back to Pinterest and click Continue to verify.
🟩 OPTION 3: TXT RECORD METHOD (Advanced)
If you manage your domain DNS (like on GoDaddy, Namecheap, or Cloudflare), you can verify using a TXT record.
- Log into your domain registrar or DNS host.
- Go to DNS settings.
- Add a new TXT record with the info Pinterest gives you.
- Save changes and return to Pinterest to verify.
⚠️ This method may take a few hours to go through.
Return to Pinterest and Click “Continue”
Pinterest will now check for the verification. You’ll see a success message, or it may say “Pending” — that’s totally normal and can take a few minutes to 24 hours.
