When his golden retriever Rochester discovers a body behind the bounce house at Stewart’s Crossing’s first Purim carnival, Steve Levitan finds himself juggling two dangerous investigations that will test both his computer skills and his courage.

Eastern College President Babson asks Steve to use his hacking expertise to investigate Austin Graynor, a star academic whose impressive credentials might be hiding a darker past. What Steve discovers about the professor’s history with female colleagues creates an urgent dilemma about academic power and deadly consequences.

He’s distracted, though, by the murder of Yakov Shmerler, a diamond dealer who was supposed to marry eighteen-year-old Hadassah Schildkraut. Hadassah fled her restrictive Orthodox community to stay with friends of Steve’s. As he helps his detective friend Rick Stemper investigate Yakov’s murder, they uncover secrets that reach from Pennsylvania to the isolated community of Kiryas Lev in New York’s Catskill Mountains.

Hadassah’s escape has made her a target. Her blog exposing corruption in her hometown threatens powerful men who’ve built their authority on others’ silence. As both investigations converge on themes of hidden identities and the courage to challenge corrupt authority—echoing Purim’s ancient story of Queen Esther—Steve must protect those speaking truth to power while helping bring dangerous men to justice.

Interview questions:

What is your favorite part of this book and why?
I love the murder scenes in my books! In this one, there’s a carnival going
on, and Rochester the golden retriever discovers a body behind the bounce
house. The contrast between the carnival and the dead body is striking.

If you could spend time with a character from your book whom would it
be? And what would you do during that day?

Well, I have to say it would be Rochester. His character is inspired by my
first golden retriever, Samwise. He was curious and pushy and opinionated,
and I loved him. I’ve given a lot of his characteristics to Rochester, so to
spend time with him would be like going back to the years I spent loving
Samwise.

What books/authors have most inspired you?
Agatha Christie’s books introduced me to puzzle-solving within the pages
of a mystery novel. I love the attention to domestic detail in Laurie Colwin’s
books, and the sheer joy in the writing of Jimmy Buffett. I learned about
structure from reading Lawrence Block and Sue Grafton.

Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely
from your imagination?

I think they all start out as inspired by someone real, and then grow into
their own personalities. Rick Stemper, Steve’s best friend, was inspired by
a friend from my high school chemistry class. But the real guy today is a
commercial pilot, not a police detective!

What made you want to become a writer?
A Separate Peace by John Knowles was the first book that made me think I
could be a writer, back when I was an emotional teen. Our 10 th grade
English teacher, Mr. Norman Haider, asked us to rewrite the book from
Finny’s point of view, and that opened the floodgates for me.
