The truth will set you free – or it will kill you.
Kat Lawson’s new undercover assignment has turned deadly. A trip to Vietnam to write a travel
feature for Journey International while making a drop to deliver cash and passports for a top-
secret operation has gone awry. Kat has a choice to make and a target on her back. She can live
with a secret, or she can reveal a truth that puts her in the crosshairs of an enemy sworn to kill

her. With the lives of trafficked children at stake in a country where agents and double agents
trade secrets, Kat must choose between the acceptance of a truth that will forever change her life
or living a lie that will save the lives of others.

Author Interview

What is your favorite part of this book and why?
I always like the setup, where my protagonist, in this case Kat Lawson, realizes she can’t take the easy way out and decides that, despite the danger, she chooses to follow her gut and defy those around her to solve the crime. This is often the first time the reader sees the internal conflict that drives Kat to pursue the impossible and the roller coaster ride that follows.

If you could spend time with a character from your book, who would it be? And what would you do during that day?
That’s easy. I’d like to have a glass of wine with Kat Lawson and Sophie Brill, Kat’s FBI handler. Or better yet, I’d like to be one of Sophie’s cats, sitting quietly and listening to their exchange of barbs. Kat serves as Sophie’s eyes, ears, and legs in the field, while Sophie, who is both Kat’s publisher and FBI handler, is the more experienced of the two. There’s a 25-year generational gap between them, often leading to
miscommunication when it comes to Kat following orders. Kat sums it up as split-second decisions she needs to make in the field. Sophie believes Kat’s careless and hardheaded.

What books/authors have most inspired you?
I’ve always been a fan of historical and international mysteries. Some of my favorite authors are Ken Follett, Scott Turow, James Mitchner, Agatha Christie, Kate Quinn, Philippa Gregory, Lee Child, Jeffery Deaver, Stephen King, Dan Brown, Dorothy Sayers, Nelson DeMille, and Sue Grafton.

Are your characters based on real people, or did they all come entirely from your imagination?
My protagonist, Kat Lawson, is inspired by female investigative reporters I’ve known who thrived on the thrill of a compelling story. To say they were ballbusters would suggest they were too similar to their male counterparts.

Instead, they were brave, brilliant, creative women who believed in brains over brawn.

What made you want to become a writer?
I’ve always had a vivid imagination. I grew up in a citrus orchard, and by the time I was seven, I had wired the trees in my backyard with my own early warning system made of strings and orange cans to scare off
intruders. At ten, I created a simple newsletter that I mimeographed on my mother’s copy machine, where she taught school. By twelve, I entered my grade school’s creative writing contest, and by high school, I joined both the debate team and the school newspaper.
When I started college, it seemed natural that I would choose a career in communications, so I majored in journalism and then spent 25 years working in news and talk radio. But it wasn’t until I retired that I allowed myself to write fiction. So far, I’ve written three different mystery series: The Carol Childs Mysteries, The Misty Dawn Trilogy, and my current series, The Kat Lawson Mysteries. I’ve also written many short stories and audio files (some of which are free for visitors to my website, www.nancycolesilverman.com), and I teach creative writing. I believe writing is a gift, and I love that I was chosen to do it.
