The Magic of Mister Mishkins

Everyone’s favourite magical ginger cat returns to his Apothecary on Mosaic Street in book two of the Magical Mister Mishkins Series. Here, Mister Mishkins encounters Celene, a girl with a dream to dance with the mice on the moon. As well as Celene, Mister Mishkins and his clowder of cats help a range of children with their everyday fears.

When a boy jumps into the Apothecary drawers, Mister Mishkins’ new friend, Nero the Hero, joins the cats as they battle the emotions within the realm and try to reach the boy before it is too late.

Will they be able to save the boy? And will Celene make it to the moon? Mister Mishkins has all the answers!

Samantha Mattocks’ next book in her spellbinding The Mister Mishkins Series further evolves the colourful, magical world she has created, brought to life so beautifully by Gerda Smit’s illustrations and loved by children the world over.

The Magic of Mister Mishkins
By Samantha Mattocks
The Magic of Mister Mishkins is a story very close to my heart. Not only are all the
cats in the book real, but the story takes the simple, everyday fears and worries that
children, and adults, have and transforms them into something magical.
Scared of thunder? Mister Mishkins and his Apothecary have a cat for that.
Worried about things that go bump in the night? Mister Mishkins has two cats to
explain that fear away!
Or maybe it’s a feeling of being lonely? Again, Mister Mishkins can help you.
Through The Magical Mister Mishkins series, I have created a realm where
anything is possible. Through the Apothecary on Mosaic Street – which magically
appears overnight in a town wherever it is needed – Mister Mishkins looks after both
the cats within the drawers, and those who find their way there. Children, adults, and
even a dog appear, and through transformative adventures, their fears and worries
melt away into thin air. That thunder you are so scared of? It is just Jasper Cat
chasing a butterfly down a mountain. The things that go bump in the night are down
to feline brothers Olli and Cosmo playing underneath your bed. And Ricky Cat will
show you that being alone doesn’t always mean you are lonely.
Each book in the series has a central child with a dream – Luca, in book one,
wants his family to spend more time playing, while Celene in book two dreams of
dancing with mice on the moon. As the book continues, we see each child become
more confident and happy, until their dreams are finally realised.
The lead character, and who the books are named after, however, is my cat
Mishkins. It was he who healed my broken heart after I lost my previous cat, Merlin.
When Merlin died, I said that he was sliding down rainbows with glitter coming out of
his tail, and that is how he appears in book one, when he arrives at a young
Mishkins’ feet to tell him of his magical future. I decided Merlin is still sliding down
those rainbows, so he opens book two – and will be a little illustration of him to find in
all future books.
I think that is the beauty of all the cats being real. I can keep their memory alive
through the pages of these books, and with Gerda Smit’s incredible illustrations, she
captures the essence of each cat so well. We worked together on both books, and
she has found herself as moved by the stories as readers have. We are already
looking forward to book three.
I honestly love writing these books, and I find great joy in receiving feedback from
parents and schools about how Mister Mishkins has brought children out of their
shells, made them more confident readers, and even helped them understand their
own emotions that much more. To receive such feedback is everything – and yes,
Mister Mishkins gets extra treats when it arrives!
Above all, the recurring theme throughout the book is one of kindness and
support, with agitated visitors being met with a smile, and an understanding that
everyone is different. In a world that can sometimes seem dark, The Magic of Mister
Mishkins brings hope, light, and love. And truly, who can ask for more than that.
