The Evacuee’s Secret

A forgotten village. A dangerous secret. A love that defies time.

In a Yorkshire village, condemned to be flooded as a reservoir, WW11 evacuee, Louise Pearson, commits a crime with devastating consequences.

A secret that keeps her away from her childhood home and her best friend and soul mate, Richard, for twenty years.

In 1965, fleeing a dangerous marriage, Louise returns to Yorkshire assuming a new identity. But the village she once knew and loved is about to be submerged to create a reservoir.

As the waters rise, so do the ghosts of her past.

Will Louise uncover the strength to face her demons and reclaim the love she left behind? Or will the secrets that surface pull her under forever?

A heart-breaking story of love, loss and betrayal.

Exclusive Extract

In this extract, Louise Pearson returns from a site visit to High House––the offices and accommodation used by the team responsible for creating the reservoir. Hiding from her gangster husband, Eddie, and the Mob, as she tries to find and destroy evidence of a crime she committed twenty years ago; Louise is using a pseudonym, Jane Cox.

Fliss the receptionist greets her…

‘I just booked three lads in to the men’s dorm. One of them from London.’

‘Are we expecting any more?’ Louise idly flipped through a pile of unopened mail.

‘We are, as a matter of fact. One male and two women. Now we have a date for the trial flood. It’s all systems go. Bet you’re glad you have a private room.’

‘I am. Who’s Jenny Rutter?’

‘Must be one of the women we’re expecting. Pass it over and I’ll put it with the one for Louise Pearson.’

Louise went cold. She must have misheard. ‘What was that name?’

‘Louise Pearson. I haven’t checked the names of our new arrivals; just guessing this mail is for them. Hold on, I’ll take a look.’

Fliss consulted a diary, the letter still in one hand. ‘Jenny Rutter, Mary Jones, and Sue Forbes. No Louise Pearson. That’s odd.’

‘Can I look?’ Louise’s heart was beating so hard she was afraid it would give her away. The letter had a typed address for Louise Pearson at High House.

‘Oh. I know what this is. Leave it with me and I’ll pass it on.’

Fliss shrugged. ‘Okay. I’ll let you know if anything else arrives for her. Will Louise Pearson need a single room? There’s not much accommodation left upstairs. You don’t want her booting you out of your room.’

Louise gave a half-hearted laugh as she took off up the stairs, the letter grasped in one hand.

The man from Hardwicks passed her on the stairs. ‘I pushed them up against the wall of your room. Stacked. Hope that’s okay,’

It took a couple of seconds for Louise to register what he was talking about. ‘Yes. Thank you.’

In her room, she sank on to the bed. Maybe it was another Louise Pearson. The post mark was local. Not London. Eddie would not have used her maiden name. It was a different Louise. Her fingers trembled as she opened the envelope. Inside was a handwritten message:

Your secret is not safe with me.

Louise’s mind raced through the people who could have sent this warning. Susan Jeffreys. It had to be. What was she intending to do with the information? Blackmail? Louise felt sick. She could imagine the headlines: ‘Corporation employee returns to the scene of her crime.’‘Teenager Louise Pearson, branded a cold and heartless killer.’ And if Susan shared the incriminating evidence, and Louise was convicted—a life sentence? The death penalty?

Louise was tired of running. The Mob. Susan Jeffreys. Richard Braithwaite was the only light in her life. If the reservoir swallowed Becks farm, he would never forgive her. Her light extinguished.
