Old Town Virginia’s entertaining guru and occasional sleuth Sophie Winston – a young
Martha Stewart in the making – juggles Fourth of July fireworks, a houseful of guests, and
homicide in the latest Domestic Diva culinary mystery from New York Times bestselling author
Krista Davis.
With a big crowd descending on her Northern Virginia home, it’s a good thing event planner
Sophie Winston is an expert at entertaining. Whipping up patriotic pastries is as easy as pie for
her, though meeting the man her widowed Aunt Melly just impulsively married in Las Vegas is a
little more awkward. Especially when Melly’s longtime, now-heartbroken secret admirer is there
too, which could lead to some fireworks.
But the house party really gets explosive when Sophie’s favorite tour guide falls victim to a
killer—and evidence points to Sophie’s own father. Will DNA really incriminate her dad? And
what’s the real story with her new uncle-by-marriage and the mysterious pal he’s brought along
with him? Some of the secrets Sophie’s discovering are raising flags—and while the police
department casts suspicion on her father, she has to declare her independence as a detective to
find the real culprit, and serve justice along with her red, white, and blue cupcakes . . .
Includes delicious recipes, fabulous decorating tips, and easy entertaining hacks!

Character Interview
Describe yourself.
I’m Sophie Winston. I have my own event planning business. Mostly I work with
corporations and charities. I arrange conventions and balls, which are so much fun. I don’t
plan weddings. Crazy bridezillas are too much to handle! So are their mothers.
I live in Old Town, Alexandria, Virginia, which I love. They have strict construction codes, so
the houses are all still the old Federal style. It’s a joy just to stroll along the streets looking
at the houses.
I have a hound mix named Daisy, and an Ocicat cat named Mochie (mo-key).
What makes you laugh?
Amusing people. The antics of dogs and cats. My friends. And I love comedies!
Are you afraid of anything?
Snakes and murderers. Shudder!
Do you have a special talent or gift?
I don’t think it’s a talent, but I like to cook and bake, mostly because I like to eat. It’s
amazing what a platter of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies can do to get someone to
open up to you! It’s one of the little tricks I sometimes use when I’m questioning someone
about a murder. I’ve been fairly successful in identifying murderers, so people come to me
and ask me to find the killers of their loved ones. I wouldn’t call that a talent, but maybe it
is!
Do you have a secret?
Not really. I’m a pretty open person. But a lot of the people I question in regard to a murder
have secrets! Some of them are very juicy!
Tell us about your family.
My Mom and Dad are very kind. I don’t get to see them as often as I’d like, but my family is
staying with me over the July 4 th holiday. My Aunt Melly came, too, with her brand new
husband. We’re not sure about him yet. When I was out at sunrise, walking my dog, I spied
him coming out of the gate of a widow’s house! Yikes! What’s that about?
My sister is here, too, but she’s coming back to my house just before the rest of us get up!
She’s an adult and I’m trying not to be nosy or get into her business, but seriously, the bars
close at 2AM!
What is your most embarrassing moment?
A couple of years ago, a food delivery man passed out in the back of his van. I called 911, of course,
but he was face down, so I tried to turn him over and get him out of the van through the back doors.
He was covered in blood, and I was wearing a white dress. Well! You can imagine how awful that
looked. It turned out it wasn’t blood at all. When he collapsed, he landed in pasta! He’s fine, but I
had to walk home covered in pasta sauce that smelled like garlic. Everyone thought it was blood!
Tell me about your author.
Krista is very nice to me. Sometimes she puts me in uncomfortable situations, which is always a little
bit nerve-wracking. But she gave me a best friend who is a hoot! She lives across the street and
thinks nothing of running over in her bathrobe first thing in the morning to see what’s for breakfast!
My author also gave me a nice group of friends. One of them is my ex-husband, with whom I’m now
friends. We share our dog, Daisy, because neither of us wanted to give her up. But it works out.
When he travels, I take care of her, and when I’m swamped and working late, she stays with him.
Oh, this was supposed to be about my author. She also gave me Natasha who thinks she’s smarter
than everyone else, but I guess everyone has a Natasha in their lives. Right?
Krista has a bunch of dogs and cats. Sometimes they lure her away from me when I’m in danger! I
know she’ll come back (she always does) but I hate when I’m stuck with a killer, and I don’t know
what will happen to me next!
