In this extract Stephen and Dem are going on their first date. Here we join Stephen as he gets ready and see a little insight into his nerves and anxiety.
Stephen agonised over his choice of outfit while he shaved, all through his shower and afterwards as he dried himself in the bedroom. Demelza had said it was just a small country pub a few miles out of Coventry in a place called Fillongley. Jenny had offered to drive him there as she was heading into Birmingham for a workās night out and it was almost on the way.
In the end he decided on black trousers, snug not tight, he couldnāt bear not feeling like he could move, with a crisp white shirt.
āAre you sure you donāt need a lift home?ā Jen asked as she dropped him off in The Cottage car park.
āIām not planning on coming home tonight.ā He winked at her as he got out, being careful not to knock any of the heads off the flowers. He had had to condense the bouquet quite a bit, it was just far too big to handle and now Jenās kitchen looked like a floristās.
āCocky.ā She scolded gently.
āI prefer hopeful,ā he said, leaning through the open window. āAnyway, you might pull and end up somewhere else. Wonāt Lauren be there?ā Lauren was Jenās current eye candy.
āShe might be.ā Jen put her hands on the steering wheel. āIāll let you know tomorrow.ā And with that, she gave him a cheeky grin and pressed the button that put her car window up. With a quick wave, she was gone.
The nerves kicked in again as he headed towards the door, was she already there waiting for him, what would she be wearing, would she even be there? He was a little disappointed to find she hadnāt yet arrived but after checking his watch he realised he was a good ten minutes early.
He ordered a pint of cider and headed over to the table the waitress had indicated to him. It was in a little nook by the fireplace, and he sat facing the door so he could see when she walked in.
He was more nervous than heād ever been before going on stage and he knew it was because this was all him, the real Stephen Shaw not the one that made people laugh with his quick wit, sarcasm and innuendo, no, this was him on show, his heart on the line and he really didnāt want to mess it up. There were so many thoughts running through his head that he was finding it hard to concentrate so he focused on one point in front of him and consciously slowed his breathing, in and out, over, and over until he felt back on an even keel again.
Then, as his breathing was virtually back to normal, his pulse quickened as he saw her walk through the door. He thought that she looked nervous, she was pushing her fringe back and flicking her eyes around the room. Then she caught sight of him, and he thought he would melt into his chair. Her face lit up instantly, a smile spread across her cheeks and her eyes sparkled under the summer fairy lights that hung under the entrance.
He stood up as she approached and took in her appearance with one sweeping motion of approval.
āDo you know that you take my breath away?ā He whispered in her ear as he pulled the chair out for her and allowed her to sit down.
