What does Meg, a retired kindergarten teacher, do when the killer of her husband and only child
still walks free a year after dirt had covered their graves? Go rogue, of course!

When the detective responsible for Meg’s nightmares takes over the murder investigation of her
former student, Meg hunts the killer down with help from her friends. Their cozy lunches at
Sweet Buns Café turn into tactical meetings while these retired grade school teachers get
themselves in trouble better suited to those in their twenties. And to put the icing on their cream
scones, someone is after Meg. Is it the killer? Or has Meg uncovered secrets better left buried
with her loved ones?

About GG Calpo

GG Calpo author photo

GG Calpo is a retired lawyer and accountant who traded contracts and numbers for the far more
enjoyable chaos of fictional crime. Now she writes cozy whodunits featuring warm-hearted
golden-aged sleuths who’ve seen it all, heard it all, and will investigate a murder with zero
hesitation. She loves stories where the stakes are personal, family, and friendships are
paramount, with characters who refuse to follow the outline and endings that pull the rug out.
When not plotting twisty crimes—on paper only, of course—she spends her time reading,
crocheting blankets and sweaters for her five grandchildren, watching mystery TV shows, and
taking long walks in her neighborhood. She lives in Central New Jersey with her husband and
two corgis, Whiskey and Nugget. Visit her at www.ggcalpo.com.

Author Interview

Describe yourself.
I’m a gray-haired accidental detective with a teacher’s patience and a wanderer’s
restless feet. A year of kickboxing shaved off the pounds and fat I put on eating my
way through Europe, leaving me lean and fit but without the means to cuddle my
teenage grandson comfortably to me – not that he wants a cuddle anymore at his
age. Family – in which I include more than those tied to me by blood – is my moral
GPS, and loyalty is the mantra I live by.

What makes you laugh?
Around family and my trusted friends, I enjoy juvenile humor and sarcastic, dry, and
witty remarks. I’m not quick enough for repartee, but I love it when I hear Barbara
and Stefan go at it. Family stories, retold and wildly exaggerated, make me laugh the
loudest.

Are you afraid of anything?
Funnily enough, I don’t fear where our investigations might take us. Killers and the
shadows they cast don’t frighten me. What I fear most is the silence left behind when
you lose a loved one. The experiences not lived with them, the tender touches and
hugs not felt by them, and the words “I love you” they can no longer hear from you.

Do you have a special talent or gift?
I don’t believe so. I’m pretty ordinary, making my way through my life as best as I
can, lucky enough to have four steadfast friends and a daughter-in-law and
grandson whom I love with all my heart.

Do you have a secret?
I’m not one for keeping secrets. My life is an open book; what you see is what you
get. Mind games tire me; I prefer honesty at all times.

Tell us about your family.
I lost Rich, my beloved husband of over forty years, and Jim, my only child, twelve
months ago. My grief over their loss has not left me. It is buried in my chest, a knot
of pain that will never go away. But no matter how deep my sorrow runs, I’m grateful

to have Dora and Archer in my life to keep me moving forward. Loving them brings
me comfort, and I will go to the ends of the world to protect them.

Who is the most important person in your life?
It would be Archer. He’s my family’s past, present, and future. In him, I see echoes of
Rich and Jim and the future they could have lived. Archer is the sole legacy of my
beloved son, and he is the living thread which connects me to both Rich and Jim.

What is your most embarrassing moment?
This happened about six months ago. I was at home with Archer, bragging to him
about how good I’d gotten with kickboxing. But instead of agreeing with me like the
good grandson he should be, the little brat kept teasing me on how I was making it
all up. So I stood, squared shoulders, shifted my body and kicked out with my right
leg, only to end up on my butt on the floor and my face on the carpet! My pet,
Cannoli, spooked by my kick, had darted into my left leg and knocked me off
balance. And the worst part is Archer just kept laughing instead of helping me up
from the floor. Teenagers!

What do you do for fun?
When we’re not out solving mysteries, I garden, bake, and read. And when I need to
exercise my “little gray cells” I watch crime shows on TV. The cozy ones, not thrillers
with violence and gore — though the sex isn’t necessarily hard to watch. Anyway
…solving a whodunit can keep me occupied for hours.

If you could change anything about your life what would it be?
A part of me wishes I’d joined Rich and Jim when they went kayaking the day their
kayak overturned. Maybe I could have helped? Or maybe I would have drowned with
them. But either way, I would have been there, laughing along with them, enjoying
the river and the sun shining on us. And most of all, by being there, I’d wouldn’t be
wondering now how it was for them that day.

Tell me about your author.
GG Calpo doesn’t just write my story – she listens to me and feels my pain. She
takes my rambling thoughts and puts them into words, shapes them into something
clear and true, making me braver, more loving and smarter. She believes in loyalty
as fiercely as I do. And I trust her to carry the heart of my story.

Do you like the way they write you?
Yes — deeply. GG Calpo writes about me with honesty. She appreciates my
strengths and doesn’t soften my flaws. Readers get to know me as I am, which is
how it should be. Seeing my unvarnished self in the pages of Hook, Line, and
Murder can be scary, but having myself written with that kind of understanding tells
me that GG Calpo has kept faith with me, and that my trust in her has been honored.
