~Storybook Lady

My rating for Two Purloined Pillows by Allie Pleiter is four stars, and I do recommend it. Ms. Pleiter is a good author and kept me guessing on who did it. The biggest reason I recommend it is that Ms. Pleiter wrote the book without letting anything from the first book slip out. I love that.

When 30-something graphic artist Shelby Phillips reluctantly returned to her small hometown outside Asheville, North Carolina to manage her mother’s needlepoint shop, she thought it was temporary. But getting entangled in murder investigations has a timeline of its own…

It’s been a little over a year since Shelby started managing Nina’s Nimble Needle following her office-romance and career implosion, and Shelby’s mom has finally handed her the reins—technically, at least. Next, Shelby is excited to oversee two well-known needlepoint designers who will be participating in the town’s first two-week-long arts festival . . .

Laura Bitters and Paul Bardo have each stitched up one-of-a-kind pillows that should be big wins for the Nimble Needle at the festival’s auction . . . until the pillows vanish amid a sudden string of shoplifting incidents.

To add to the knot in Shelby’s stomach, Laura proves highly anxious, while Paul is an egomaniac who believes Laura has been stealing his customers for years. But things go from bad to tragic when Laura behaves oddly at the auction dinner, then collapses—dead.

Soon after, Shelby makes a shocking discovery in Laura’s room at the local inn. Then tests reveal that Laura was poisoned. Resolved to piece together the truth, despite the police chief’s determination to keep her on the fringes, Shelby rallies her personal team, including her sister, Jessica, her friend Deb, and Jake, her potentially more than a friend. As an extra twist, a magazine reporter arrives with unsettling—yet useful—dirt that includes Laura and Paul.

What unravels is a skein of suspects, long-held resentment, bitter jealousy, and betrayal, from which Shelby will have to pull the one crucial thread tied to the killer: a murder-worthy motive . . .

Sarandipity’s Character Interview

Allie Pleiter
Shelby Phillips from TWO PURLOINED PILLOWS

Describe yourself.
I’m Shelby Phillips, the current manager of Nina’s Nimble Needle needlepoint shop in Gwen Lake North Carolina. When I started my graphic arts career in a big Georgia city, I didn’t plan on it falling apart and my coming back to my hometown. It was supposed to be a short-term visit to watch Mom’s shop, but now I’ve been here a while and am discovering how much I love the place and the people.

What makes you laugh?
More often than not, it’s the NYAGs—the “Not Your Average Grannies” who are shop regulars and often found stitching and gossiping around the table in the back of the shop. They say exactly what they are thinking—whether you want to hear it or not. Mycat, Nabbit, often makes me laugh as well.

Are you afraid of anything?
Lately, I’m afraid this unintentional side-hustle of solving murders will become a regular thing. I thought when I was moving back to Gwen Lake that it would be to a quieter, calmer—if quirkier—kind of life. It’s definitely not turning out that way. Oh, and spiders. Not a big fan of those.

Do you have a special talent or gift?
Much to my happy surprise, I’ve discovered I have inherited my mother’s gift for matching people with the perfect needlepoint project. One that will give them the satisfaction of art well done, the soothing nature of craft, and a connection to other stitchers. My mom always said it was “in my blood”—I’m glad to know that’s true.

Do you have a secret?
Other than the several pints of decadent ice cream in my fridge, I’m not telling.

Tell us about your family.
I grew up in Gwen Lake, so my whole family is here. My mom Nina of Nina’s Nimble Needle still owns the shop even though I run it. Everyone knows her for her creative talents. My dad is a great guy and has had a lot of fun in their recent retirement. Every few months they take an extended trip in the Nimble Nomad, their new motor home. My sister Jessica is, well, one of those oh-so-perfect perfect people. With a perfect family of two boys who naturally excel. At everything. Most days I can live with that level of
perfection. But not all days.

Who is the most important person in your life?
The friendships I’ve made here in Gwen Lake mean a lot to me. Deb, who runs the coffeeshop just down the street, has become a great friend. She’s the scientific, analytical mind to my creative, imaginative spirit, so we make a good pair (and she makes great coffee!). Then there’s Jake, the handsome local mechanic. Steady, solid,no pretense, gorgeous eyes—what’s not to like? We’re good friends, but things are starting to feel like it might turn into more than just friendship.

What do you do for fun?
Needlepoint, of course! I love the colors, the textures, the beauty of the canvas and how
you make it your own as you stitch it. I also am very fond of a good long walk around
the lake. Our whole town also has a fascination with model boats—the Gwen Lake
Yacht Club is something to see!

If you could change anything about your life what would it be?
I had this whole plan as to how my life would work out. That plan hasn’t happened. I’m learning to enjoy and embrace the way things have turned out, but it’s been a bit of a struggle. So, I suppose I’d change my ability to embrace with confidence where I am now.

Tell me about your author.
Allie is a lot of fun to be around. She has a wild sense of humor (who else could come up with a model boat yacht club?) and she claims to be a NYAG now that she’s become a grandmother. She loves crafts as much as I do, especially knitting and of course needlepoint. I’m in excellent hands—she has over 70 published books to her name!

Do you like the way they write you?
I do. She’s given me my own great sense of humor and a keen eye for detail. Those are essential in my life these days. I’m definitely looking forward to Allie’s imagination taking me on more adventures with new mysteries to solve!
