A tale of corruption and deceit met with compassion and tenacity.
Kimberlee, Dorian, and their pets return to Grandmother Lassiter’s multimillion-dollar horse ranch on the Mexico/Texas border to settle her affairs following her demise.
On their first day in Texas, an illegal immigrant, likely carrying drugs, is found murdered on the Lassiter ranch. A six-year-old girl is at his side.
Black Cat and Angel overhear a ranch hand admit to the murder and declare to eliminate the child who witnessed his crime.
Determined to shelter the little girl, the family is thrust into affairs that include intrigue, humor, and mystery. Join the family as they ride with wild horses and search for a notorious Wild West bandit’s undiscovered stolen treasure.
Black Cat joins forces with Murphy, his Maine Coon rival and compatriot, and Cedric, the resident barn rat, in an attempt to prevent another murder and capture the miscreant.
Sprinkled generously with Black Cat and Angel’s humorous relationship and interactions, this is another story that will delight Black Cat’s fans, cat lovers, or readers who enjoy light mysteries and humor.

Interview questions:
What is your favorite part of this book and why?
Once in Texas, Black Cat and Angel go to the barn to see the newborn foal. While Angel visits the foal, Black Cat encounters Scarlet (the barn harlot) and girlfriend of Murphy, the Maine Coon, who runs the barn.
Their conversation is hysterical, as Scarlet tries to put the moves on Black Cat, “Whatcha’ doin’, big boy? Where have you been all my life?”
Black Cata’s head whipped around. A tortoiseshell female cat with long, coquettish whiskers sat on a nearby hay bale, her front feet tucked seductively under her bosom. Her black tail swished in a
hypnotic, measured rhythm.
Black Cat’s eyes locked on her swishing tail. How could he help himself? He was a tomcat, after all, and the provocative demeanor of this luscious example of feline loveliness offered much, in words unspoken.
He opened his mouth, but words escaped him. He lowered his head. With his Angel less than five feet away on the other side of the door, he was acting like a…a… Finally, finding his voice, he said.
“Afternoon, ma’am. I’m Black Cat, from California. We’re here with our persons to settle Grandmother’s affairs.”
“Well, fiddle-dee-dee! I’m looking forward to being one of the affairs you’ll settle while you’re here.” Her giggle reminded him of the tinkle of wind chimes blowing across the dusty prairie. “I’m Scarlet,” she tittered. “
Her giggle sent prickles down his back. The kind of prickles that shouldn’t be anywhere near the devoted mate of beautiful Angel. And yet… and yet…
Murphy overhears the conversation, and Angel takes offense at Black Cat’s supposed response to temptation. Throughout the story, the animals’ humorous interactions lend much to the story.
If you could spend time with a character from your book whom would it be? And what would you do during that day?
It’s hard to choose a particular character, but as a lifelong cat lover, I’d spend time with Black Cat, Angel, and Murphy. They reached an agreement to cooperate in exposing the killer. It would be fun to think
that cats have the same human qualities we have, and the noble intentions we strive to reach. I guess I’d hang out in the barn with the horses, the cats, and have a lengthy conversation with Cedric, the wise
barn rat, who appears to have wisdom beyond our expectations and a sense of humor unexpected in a rat.
What books/authors have most inspired you?
Years ago, I was gifted a book by Paul Gallico called The Silent Meow, in which he discovers that his cat has written a book about her life from her point of view. As a cat lover and a budding author, the concept
completely intrigued me and was the catalyst that encouraged me to write the five Black Cat mysteries, wherein he shares his point of view and narrates part of each mystery adventure.
I also loved all of James Heriott’s “All Creatures Great and Small” series. Finding humor in even the most difficult situations feels like the best way to connect to a reader and provide them with a balanced and
enjoyable reading adventure.
Are your characters based off real people, or did they all come entirely from your imagination?
My two cats were the physical muse for Black Cat and Ange, but none of the human characters are based on real people. Often, I’ll have my characters experience a personal event from my life. In Black Cat and
the Secret in Dewey’s Diary, (another Black Cat mystery/adventure), Kimberlee goes to Austria and experiences many situations that were my personal experiences.
In Black Cat and the Immigrant Child, several scenes were based on actual events, as the Border Patrol faces real-life emergencies along the Rio Grande, encountering illegal immigrants. There is also a situation (based on fact) where Kimberlee searches for the legendary lost bullion from bandits’ stagecoach and bank robberies, said to be buried in the vicinity of their Texas horse ranch.
What made you want to become a writer?
I started writing little poems as a child, and by high school, was writing short stories. I think becoming a writer is something born within us. It remains one’s responsibility to study the craft and seek the education necessary to improve one’s skills. Hopefully, a good imagination and determination will add to one’s success.
