Cool Change is a fun, entertaining cozy mystery. I love the music theme of the series, the book has its own playlist, including one of my favorites by Carole King from her Tapestry album, which I did cue up with the rest of the list after I finished the book.

Kevin Zelenka has offered up a Cool Change for mystery fans. The Tony Delucca mysteries are cozy, but not cutesy. The coziness in the book is the charm provided by all the details that ring true. The strength of the mystery story is also in the details.

Who Is Tony DeLucca?
A visit to Bear Claw Bakery
We arrived at Bear Claw Bakery on a Wednesday morning, just as the last of the breakfast rush was thinning out. The cases were still half full, the coffee was fresh, and we found Stacy Macy, co-owner of the bakery, behind the counter, moving with quiet efficiency. We introduced ourselves and asked her a simple question: Who is Tony DeLucca?
Stacy doesn’t hesitate.
“Stable,” she said, sliding a bag of pastries across the counter to a departing customer without breaking stride. “Which sounds boring when you say it out loud, but it isn’t. Not really. Flat Rock gets its share of people passing through, people who show up and then disappear when things get complicated. Tony’s not that. He came back, planted his feet, and he’s here.” She paused to ring
up another order. “He’s also just a genuinely nice guy. I know that sounds like something you say when you can’t think of anything else. But I mean it. Good people.”
“What’s he like to be around?”
“Quiet,” she said. “Not uncomfortable quiet. Just… he doesn’t fill a room with noise for its own sake. He listens. You don’t find that as often as you’d think.” She topped off the cup of a customer who had approached the counter for a refill. “He’s also funny. Dry. The kind of funny where you’re not always sure he meant it to be funny, and then you look at him and realize he absolutely did.”
She paused, glancing toward the kitchen entryway, and, as if on cue, the door swung open, and her business partner, Brenda Welch, came out. The woman had a towel over her shoulder, flour on her forearm, and was already scanning the counter for whatever needed attention.
Stacy’s expression shifted into something that could only be described as delighted.
“Actually,” she said, “you should really be asking her.”
Brenda looked up at the interviewer and then stole a glance at Stacy’s face.
“What did you do?” she said.
“Nothing.” Stacy smiled. “They’re asking about Tony.”
A beat.
“I have croissants in the oven,” Brenda said.
“They’ll keep.”
Brenda sighed, pulling up a stool behind the counter, and folded her hands.
“What do you want to know?”
“Who is Tony DeLucca?” We asked again.
Brenda was quiet for a moment, which felt like an answer in itself.
“Tony is someone who doesn’t make a lot of noise about who he is,” she said finally. “He just
shows up. Does what needs to be done and doesn’t ask for credit.” She smoothed the towel in her
lap. “He moved home, and I think most people expected him to be different. The Army changes people. And it did, but not in the ways you’d expect. He’s still…” She paused, searching for the word. “Steady. In a world that moves fast and gets loud, Tony is steady.”
“What surprised you most about him returning to Flat Rock?”
She thought about that one for a moment.
“That he moved back at all. He had options. The Army was his whole life for ten years. Walking away from that, starting over in a small town…that’s not a small thing.” She paused. “But he lost his mom. And his father was here. Alone. For the first time in a long time.” She folded her hands on the counter. “I think losing her made him realize what mattered. And what mattered was being
close to his dad. He didn’t make a big announcement about it. He didn’t need anyone to validate the decision.” She paused again, quieter this time. “People matter to him. Family matters to him.
And he was brave enough to act on that even when it wasn’t the easy thing to do.”
“Is he someone who takes chances?”
Brenda considered the question.
“Not naturally,” she said finally. “He’s measured. Careful.” She paused, and something quiet moved across her face. “But he’s… open. More than he lets on. You just have to know which door to knock on.”
“Can you give us an example?”
The corner of her mouth turned up slightly.
“I talked him into buying a box of records at an estate auction the weekend he came back. Five dollars. He barely had his apartment set up.” She shook her head softly. “He raised his hand to bid before he’d even thought it through. And now his record player is the first thing he put in his new place.”
She let that sit for a moment.
“That’s Tony. He just needed someone to knock on the right door.”
A timer went off somewhere behind her. Brenda stood, tucking the towel back into her apron strings. “The croissants,” she said simply, and headed back toward the back room.
At the register, Stacy watched the door settle closed behind her. Then she turned back with a small smile.
“His dad was definitely part of why he came home,” she said. “But this town has other things worth coming home to.” She motioned with her head towards the kitchen door and then picked up a coffee pot. “Even if some people would never say that out loud.”
As she stepped from behind the counter to go refill cups, she gave us a smirk.
“She likes him,” she said. “In case that wasn’t clear.”
