Three cases. One body. Zero chance of staying out of trouble.
Kate Tessler may have thought her days of chasing danger were over. But the former war
correspondent’s “retirement” in sunny Paradise, Arizona, is anything but quiet. With her
eccentric circle of friends and colleagues, Kate has built a new life—full of mysteries, mayhem,
and the occasional stakeout—as she works towards earning her PI license.
After wrapping her last case, Kate wonders what’s next when three cases—all brought by
friends—fall into her lap. Squatters in a snowbird’s house, local pedigree dogs disappearing, and
smash and grab burglaries at local pot shops. Kate juggles the cases with help from her usual cast
of amateur crime solvers, including the teen sons of Paradise’s mayor. As she digs, Kate suspects
at least two cases are connected.
But things turn deadly when a late-night stakeout leads Kate and one teen sidekick, interested in
investigative work, straight to a body. Was it a gruesome accident—or something far more
sinister?
With humor and high stakes, The Accidental Detective mysteries prove that danger and
friendship don’t retire quietly.

Something Prowling in Paradise Park (The Accidental Detective Book 7) by Kris Bock
As a mystery writer, I’m always on the lookout for interesting people, places, and crimes. I have
a document where I keep notes on items that might work in a novel. Writing Something
Prowling in Paradise Park had me exploring, among other things, the use of stolen in Kias (the
car, not the New Zealand bird) to burgle marijuana dispensaries. (FYI, robbery is stealing from
someone through threats or force, and burglary is a theft that happens during a break in when
no one is there.)
So what do Kia theft have to do with marijuana dispensaries? Certain models of Kia Souls and
Hyundai Sonatas didn’t have an engine immobilizer, which stops cars from starting without a
key. In 2021, TikTok spread videos of young people using a hack to start vehicles quickly
without keys. Thefts soared.
The same time period saw marijuana legalization in multiple states. It was largely a cash
business at first, as banks hesitated to get involved with a trade that was still illegal at the
federal level. Seattle had a rash of burglaries where the thieves stole Kias using the hack and
rammed the cars through dispensary walls. The thieves stole cash and product, left the cars
behind, and fled on foot. Over time, the practice spread to some other cities.
During my research, I also came across an article about a group of New Mexico teachers who
quit their classroom jobs to open a dispensary. (That surely says something about the
challenges of being a teacher these days, but that’s another topic.) The article noted the low
number of Hispanics in the cannabis business. This inspired my fictional business owners, a
mother and daughter team who opened a dispensary after Grandma found cannabis helped
during her cancer treatments.
The cannabis shop smash and grab burglaries are only one of the mysteries Kate, her sister Jen,
and their eclectic friends tackle in Something Prowling in Paradise Park. I hope you’ve enjoyed
this glimpse at the research that goes into creating a mystery novel.
Something Prowling in Paradise Park (The Accidental Detective Book 7) by Kris Bock
Kate has built a new life in Arizona, with the help of family and friends eager to keep her busy
with new mysteries to solve. Her eccentric senior pals introduce her to the Standishes. These
snowbirds returned to Arizona early to investigate their high utility bills and discovered
squatters with a forged rental agreement. It could take months to evict them legally. Can the
gang find a faster way to oust the intruders?
Her boyfriend’s sons bring Kate another case: dog thefts in the neighborhood. What if their
beloved Whiskers is next? Then there’s the car that rammed through the wall of a dispensary
and stole thousands in cash and product. Is it connected to one of the other mystery somehow?
This amateur detective and her found family follow the clues and uncover secrets. The
investigation takes a dangerous twist with the discovery of a body. Was the bizarre death a
freakish accident—or murder?
In The Accidental Detective humorous mystery series, a witty journalist solves mysteries in
