Character Interview

Describe yourself.
Hi! I’m Kelsey McKenna and I’m a destination wedding planner. I love my job — really, I do.
Except that when things go wrong, everybody looks at me to fix it. And it seems like something
always goes wrong! I mean, don’t get me wrong. It’s not my fault, it’s just that sometimes things
are beyond my control. Like when there’s a murder — wait, scratch that. I don’t want people to
think that happens all the time! I’ve planned so many weddings where nothing has gone wrong
at all! I guess that’s what happens when you fly off to other countries with people you don’t know
very well.

What makes you laugh?
Everything! I mean, you have to keep your sense of humor, right? Especially when there’s a —
well, you know, when things go wrong. I love spending time with the people who know me best
because when we get going, our conversations are pretty funny. I also think it’s funny to read
about other people’s wedding dramas — as long as it’s not at one of my weddings!

Are you afraid of anything?
I don’t love snakes and other creepy crawlies, and I’m always afraid I’ll miss my flight, but my
biggest fear is disappointing one of my clients. Their wedding is one of the most important days
of their life, and they’re trusting me for everything to go perfectly. That’s a lot of pressure!

Do you have a special talent or gift?
After working with so many different couples, not to mention their family and friends, I’d like to
think I’m good at reading people. You have to learn to be really tactful and not say what you’re
thinking at any given moment but that’s so hard to do! I’ve had to develop that skill over the
years. Some might say I’m still working on it.

Do you have a secret?
Okay, but this is just between us. At work I have to be so buttoned up and organized. Everything
has to be absolutely perfect. So two guesses what my apartment in San Francisco looks like!
Also I eat cereal for dinner more than I would like to admit.

Who is the most important person in your life?
My best friend is Brody, and he’s a wedding photographer, so I get to work with him all the time.
Everyone always thinks we’re a couple — or at least, people with no gaydar think that. And my
assistant Laurel is the best. Remind me to tell you about the time she almost eloped with a con
artist sometime!

What is your most embarrassing moment?

Okay. So this one time — just as a joke, mind you — Brody brought me a murder board. But
then it seemed like a really good idea for helping me think things through when things get …
complicated. So I may have forgotten to take it down before a client came over, and he may
have gone to use the bathroom, and he may have seen it. With his name on it. In red marker.
On the bright side, it turned out he wasn’t the murderer, so honestly he should have been
flattered I ruled him out!

What do you do for fun?
This is going to sound weird, but since my job is go, go, go, when I get some time off I really like
to … do absolutely nothing! I like having dinner with friends, but, to be honest, curling up on the
couch with a good book or movie sounds like a little slice of heaven.

If you could change anything about your life what would it be?
I would love to find my person, whether we got married or not. It’s hard to carry on a relationship
when you’re traveling for work so much. But I hear my author is working on it! She mentioned
something about a guy named Jake who owns a winery? I’m guessing that’s in book two
because it’s set in California wine country!

Tell me about your author.
She used to be an advertising copywriter, and one of her clients led to her getting a gig
ghostwriting a guide about destination weddings! That’s how we met, actually. She also just
wrote a cozy novella that is absolutely bonkers! It’s called “Welcome to Cozy Town” and you can
get it on Amazon — but you can get it for free if you sign up for her newsletter at
www.marlacooper.com ! She moved from the Bay Area back to Austin, and she has too many
cats, in my humble opinion.

Do you like the way they write you?
I do! It’s funny, I think we must be pretty similar. She has a similar background, working with
clients where she has to bite her tongue instead of blurting out everything she thinks. And we
definitely have the same sense of humor, so she gives me lots of funny lines. I’m glad I can
make her laugh, and I’m glad she sends me on so many adventures!
