Author Interview
What is your favorite part of this book and why?
I had a blast incorporating some of our favorite Houston spots and transporting them to Sumter SC. Sadly, one of them, Pecan Creek Grille, just closed. At least it will live on forever in the book.
Many of the characters are also inspired by people we know, including Racheal, from Tipsy Tavern. In the story she’s nicknamed The Angry Elf.
As I plugged bits and pieces into ChatGPT to catch any last-minute errors, it came back with this: “Let me know if you need any help folding Angry Elf drama in. She seems like a spicy character with potential.” Racheal and I got a good laugh out of that!
If you could spend time with a character from your book whom would it be? And what would you do during that day?
Of course, Duke, PI Liz Adams’ truth-sniffing Labrador retriever! We’d go for a walk, swim in the pool, and visit friends and family armed with a list of questions! Wouldn’t it be awesome to have a dog who can detect when people are fibbing?
Duke’s character is based on our Lab, Eve. She’s a communicator. She even howls her version of ‘I love you’ for her breakfast in the mornings.
What books/authors have most inspired you?
I’ve been a huge fan of Beatrix Potter since I was a little girl. Not only do I love her stories and illustrations, I admire that she was a natural scientist and conservationist. And she published her own books! The Tale of Two Bad Mice is my favorite, followed by The Tale of the Flopsy Bunnies.
As a kid, I even had a stuffed rabbit named Flopsy Mopsy. I keep my collection of her books in my writing space. She’s one of the reasons I chose to self-publish, and also why I donate a portion of the proceeds from my books to causes that help the homeless, both people and pets.
Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?
A little of both! Liz Adams and her husband Brad are figments of my imagination. Out of all the books, A Camping Conundrum has the largest cast of characters inspired by real people—Racheal and Robert (Tipsy Tavern owners), Brock and Stacey (Pecan Creek Grill owners), Ruth from the insurance agency and the infamous office dogs, Maggie and Jemma.
The rest of the tenants from the strip center where Tipsy Tavern is located?
All inspired by real people! But Park Ranger Pete and Police Chief Clayton are purely fictional.
What made you want to become a writer?
My first major in college was Journalism, but I switched to Business Administration and French and eventually became a CPA and a Human Resources professional. Twenty-plus years ago, I joined a group of women who worked through Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way.
The writing emerged from what Julia calls “morning pages. The three pages of journaling every morning unlocked something creative in me.
Story ideas and poetry started bubbling up. About five years ago, I decided to get serious. I joined a writer’s group, took classes, and entered a couple of contests. The feedback from the contests gave me the encouragement to publish Charleston Conundrum, the first book in the Liz Adams Mystery Series.
Excerpt
Tonight, I’d sleep in the tent. I wasn’t about to leave Brad alone after today’s traumatic
events.
As I snuggled up next to him in the sleeping bag, I thought about the questions I wanted
to ask the tenants tomorrow. In the distance, an owl hooted, and crickets chirped. Brad’s
breathing slowed, and his chest rose and fell. Before long, I drifted off to sleep beside him.
At around two in the morning, a sharp cry shattered the silence.
Brad started screaming, “Help!” over and over as he tossed and turned in the sleeping
bag.
Duke whined. My heart pounded as I gently shook Brad awake. He often had nightmares
about his sister’s drowning. This wasn’t the first time I’d witnessed it.
Brad sat upright and wiped sweat off his brow with the back of his hand.
“Bad dream?”
“Yeah.”
Duke pawed Brad’s leg, and I heard a crack of thunder in the distance. Seconds later, the
wind howled, and rain gushed onto our tent.
As the canvas shook, our dog whimpered.
Brad said, “Let’s make a dash for it.” He grabbed the van’s keys, unlocked the vehicle,
then unzipped the tent.
The three of us sprinted inside while thunder rumbled, and lightning flashed across the
sky. We were drenched, and pools of water formed on the van’s floor.
“That’s some storm.” I toweled off while Brad dried Duke.
“Yeah. I didn’t see that one coming. There wasn’t supposed to be any rain in the forecast,
but I didn’t check today’s weather report.”
I changed into dry clothes and attempted to clean up the mess on the floor. The van
smelled like a wet dog. I peered out the window to watch the light show outside. When a crack
of lightning illuminated our tent, I smiled—it was toast—there’d be no more sleeping outside.
