“Wicked stepmother” wasn’t something Vivien wanted on her resume (or CV!).
But six months after moving from California to join her British husband in a quiet Yorkshire
village, Vivien and her cat Sydney are confronted with a volatile 24-year-old stepdaughter and
the sparks begin to fly.
It certainly doesn’t help when they join a local protest and a body turns up.
In this sequel to Moved to Murder, Vivien must once again work with her enterprising neighbors
to solve a murder and clear her family’s name. Which isn’t easy when you’re dealing with people
who “Ear all, see all, and say nowt”!
About Gianetta Murray

Gianetta Murray grew up in California in the heady days of Silicon Valley, but for the last
twenty years has lived a slightly more peaceful existence in England with her husband and a
minimum of two cats. She enjoys rewatching Hollywood musicals and Buffy the Vampire Slayer,
plays guitar and ukulele, and stresses about using all the pears provided by the tree in her back
garden. She dreams about one day being spit on by Jonathan Groff.

Interview questions:
What is your favorite part of this book and why?
While plotting clues to solve murders and dealing with family dynamics are all a hoot, I really enjoyed helping one of the characters write a spicy novel about a preacher and a pole dancer. I do have friends who write romance novels and who begged me not to include some of the more hackneyed verbiage I have in the book, but I let them know I only use it to describe the preacher’s dreams, to show his worldview isn’t realistic. I didn’t want to admit that I was having fun typing things like “her creamy orbs heaved with desire”.
If you could spend time with a character from your book whom would it be? And what would you do during that day?
There’s a lovely character called Clive in the book who has a lot of different experiences of the world and also a parrot, Crackers, that repeats embarrassing things he’s heard. We would spend some time teaching the parrot some truly awful things to say for when Clive’s partner, who is a Member of Parliament, has distinguished guests visiting. Then we’d probably spend the rest of the day at an amusement park eating fish and chips and screaming on a roller coaster. Or going to see Hamilton on the big screen, as I’m betting Clive is also a big Jonathan Groff fan and would sing along with me.
What books/authors have most inspired you?
My two favorite golden age mystery authors are Josephine Tey and Ngaio Marsh, and I love their detectives, who are men of intellect and sensitivity.
Their novels are full of lively characters and intricate mysteries.
As for modern mystery writers, I adore a new Eva Gates/Vicki Delaney book and Kate Carlisle’s Bibiophile series, and lock myself in my room with the latest J.D. Robb when I get my hands on it.
I’m constantly amazed at the creativity behind the television series Castle, and try to emulate that kind of out-of-the-box thinking. And even though Joss Whedon seems to have personal issues, I think Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly are two of the best-written shows ever to hit television.
They taught me how to subvert audience expectations and keep things lively.
Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?
Vivien is very much a result of my life experiences, including marrying a Brit and moving to England, but she’s a bit younger, smarter, and better-looking. Because, why not? That’s the joy of being an author. And I share her cat Sydney’s love of a warm place to snooze and his desire for treats.
As for the rest of them, I like to pull phrases or memories from people I’ve known, but there isn’t another character that is based on a single person.
They’re all amalgams, enhanced with a bit of imagination and humor. And I’ve certainly never met a murderer. That I know of.
What made you want to become a writer?
When I was five, I wrote a story about being a thermos in the lunchbox and got a lot of attention at school and home because of it. I think maybe the pattern was set then. But I’ve always loved writing and literature and–except for a tragic stint working at a department store–I’ve worked as a writer, editor, knowledge manager, and librarian, knowing I’m happiest around books. Getting to study masterful writers as an English major was pure joy. So I’d have to say it was born in me, and I’m just lucky to be able to do something I enjoy. I only hope that joy is also felt by my readers!
