Book Title and Author Name

Annieโs Day
By Apple Gidley
Blurb:
War took everything. Love never had a chance. Until now.
As an Australian Army nurse, Annie endures the brutalities of World War II in Singapore and New Guinea. Later, seeking a change, she accepts a job with a British diplomatic family in Berlin, only to find herself caught up in the upheaval of the Blockade. Through it all, and despite the support of friends, the death of a man she barely knew leaves a wound that refuses to heal, threatening her to a life without love.
Years later, Annie is still haunted by what sheโd lostโand what might have been. Her days are quiet, but her memories are loud. When a dying manโs fear forces her to confront her own doubts, she forms an unexpected friendship that rekindles something she thought sheโd lost: hope.
Annieโs Day is a powerful story of love, war, and the quiet courage to start againโeven when it seems far too late.
Excerpt 2:
Chapter 2 – Australia, 1939 – 1941
General Nursing and Obstetrics qualifications clutched firmly in gloved hand, Annie waited for Iris and Verna on Oxford Street, Paddington, so they could walk along to Victoria Barracks together. She smoothed down her waisted floral dress, then touched her hat. Not often intimidated, Annie felt a flutter of nerves. What had seemed an easy decision did not feel so comfortable now.
โGโday.โ
Startled from her doubts, Annie turned at Vernaโs voice.
โAre we up for this?โ Her friend sounded buoyant.
โOf course,โ Annie said, โwell, I think so. How are you feeling, Iris?โ
โFine.โ Iris paused, brown eyes down, red curls framing her face under a navy hat. โNo, actually, not quite so fine.โ
โRemember how we felt, when we met, on our first day at Prince Henry Hospital?โ Verna grinned, her fine blonde hair escaping the neat bun at the nape of her neck. โThe anticipation of what we donโt know is worse than the real thing.โ
โYou sound like a damn textbook,โ Iris said, with a wan smile. โSlight difference,โ she added, โwe werenโt signing up to get shot.โ
โWeโll be nowhere near the shooting, ducks,โ Annie said, โnurses are way behind the lines.โ
Verna nodded, blue eyes shiny with excitement. โSheโs right, Iris. And our boysโll need support.โ
โRighto then,โ Iris smoothed her gloves over her fingers and straightened her shoulders, โcome on, anymore dilly-dallying and I might bottle out.โ
Reaching Queen Victoria Gate, they paused then, following directions given by the guard, linked arms and strode through. The imposing Regency style barracks sent a quiver down Annieโs back and made her glad they had agreed to sign on together.
The imperative to defend Australia had filtered through to even the remotest cattle stations, and men, some in uniform, some in civvies, milled around the quadrangle. A few catcalls followed the women.
โThey wouldnโt dare do that if we were already in uniform,โ Verna said with a giggle.
โI wouldnโt bet on that.โ Annie relaxed. No chance to change her mind now. She looked around the room lined with desks as they waited to be called forward, and wondered if Ernest had suffered the same qualms when heโd signed on at the Armidale Show Ground. She thought about Joe and couldnโt imagine him in the hurly-burly of basic training.
When called, the women moved forward as one. Annie answered the brusque questions first.
โName? Addressโpermanent? Education? Sign here.โ A pen was thrust into her hand.
Annie, her voice low, read aloud, โI, Annie May Cutler swear that I will well and truly serve our Sovereign Lord, the King, in the Military Forces of the Commonwealth of Australia until the cessation of the present time of war …โ Apprehension in her voice, she looked at Verna and Iris. โHellโs bells!โ Annieโs curse drew a glare from the sergeant standing nearby. She scribbled her signature and said, โWell, thatโs it then.โ
They watched the attesting officer scribble his signature below hers. Verna signed without a murmur, but Iris, her face pale, hesitated.
โItโs alright, ducks,โ Verna touched Irisโs hand. โYou donโt have to.โ
โSheโs right,โ Annie chimed in. โYouโve got to be sure.โ
They waited, then watched Iris, her eyes watery, as the pen hovered over the form before she scratched her name.
โThank you, ladies.โ The sergeant took the pen, turned and called, โNext.โ
Standing back in the quadrangle, still steadily filling with men and a scattering of women, they looked at each other as trepidation changed to composure.
โWeโre in!โ Verna said with a grin.
Iris, now less subdued, nodded. โThat was easy.โ
โIt has a ring, doesnโt it?โ Annie asked, looking down at the paper in her hand. โThe Australian Army Nursing Service.โ
โI suppose they just had to change the wording on the forms from reservist to serving.โ Verna stopped at the gates and looked back. โDo you think everyone signing on here will go to Cowra for training?โ
โDunno.โ Annie paused. โJust glad weโll be together.โ
Iris said, โYou know, I was alright until the next of kin bit.โ
Annie giggled, โListen to this bit, โI will endeavour to up uphold the highest traditions of Womanhood and of the Professions of which I am Part.โโ
โItโs not funny, Annie,โ Iris said.
โI know. But I suppose weโre going to have to laugh at things.โ Annie slung her arms around Verna and Iris as they walked back along Oxford Street, and sang, โWell, girls, weโre in the army now, tra la!โ
โWonder where weโll be sent.โ Iris clutched Annieโs hand still around her shoulder, and
squeezed. โGod, I hope we can all stay together.โ
โWell,โ Verna said, ever practical, โwe signed on together, weโre training together, so weโll probably be posted together.โ
โI hope so,โ Iris said, โIโm not as strong as you two.โ
Annie hugged her close. โRubbish, Iris.โ
โYouโre as tough as the boots weโll have to wear!โ Verna added.
โFirst,โ Annie said, taking off her hat, โwe have to learn how to march in those boots.โ
โAnd follow orders,โ Iris reminded Annie with a chortle.
โIโve been doing that since we started nursing.โ
โNot always!โ Verna grinned. โCome on, we deserve a cup of tea. My shout!โ
