Strike the Death Note book tour book cover

With just two weeks left of the summer at Aerie Pines, music shop owner Octavia Fields should be getting ready to head back to the nomadic life she lives most of the year—but the season is set to end in a minor key for her little shop.

Octavia’s determined to do everything she can to increase sales so her employees won’t have to bow out for the next season. If she’d known it would involve coming across a body with a conductor’s baton sticking out of its chest, she might not have been so eager.

While Octavia is trying to focus on her shop’s problem, music students who know she played a part in catching the last killer keep telling her what they know about the victim. She wants to pass the information on to the detective, but when one of her employees becomes a suspect, Octavia has no choice but to become the conductor of her own investigation.

Trying to save her shop, solve a murder, handle threats, and deal with her growing feelings for the lead detective is keeping Octavia’s score full—but she needs to find the sour note before someone else plays their finale!

Character Guest Post

Have we met? I’m Octavia Fields. Yes, that’s the one—the hippie violist.
Today, I’m here to tell you the Top 10 Reasons why most classical musicians aren’t hippies. I’m kind
of the expert on that, you see. Which is, of course, the reason I was asked to leave the music
conservatory. And a prominent quartet. And the Aerie Peaks Symphony.
Are you ready?

Classical musicians are meticulous about tuning. Hippies? Sure, they’ll tune. If they feel like it and
aren’t distracted checking their moon charts.

Classical musicians believe in hard work and serious practice. Hippies are too busy telling anyone
who will listen that their spirit guide once jammed with Bach.

Classical musicians end rehearsal by cleaning their instrument and packing it neatly in their case.
Hippies would rather take a few minutes to hug it out with everyone and talk about shared
intentions.

Classical musicians read sheet music better than auras. And hippies, well, they read the auras and
play whatever will vibe with their audience.

Classical musicians are super diligent when counting their rest notes. Hippies—well, let’s just say
those breaks are perfect for sinking into a deep meditation.

Classical musicians spend half their lives practicing with a metronome. Hippies think they’re kind
of oppressive. Unless we’re talking about violists and Viennese offbeats—because even a hippie
violist could nail those without a thought. Maybe we were metronome junkies in a past life or
something.

Classical musicians like everything to go according to the score. Hippies are a little more flexible.
When things go wrong—a broken string, a wrong note, a murder, of all things—they go with the
flow and hope the negative vibes stop resonating soon.

Classical musicians look amazing in tailored clothing and fashionable formalwear. Hippies like me,
on the other hand, might wear something like that when forced, but are much more comfortable in
pre-worn-in threads that have none of that starch.

Classical musicians spend so many hours in a practice room they don’t always understand people
who are best friends with trees and animals. (The squirrel and doe that have befriended me would
totally not understand this!) Hippies are thrilled to practice in a forest.

Classical musicians have to be reliable, which is something a lot of hippies have a teensy bit of
trouble with. My flexible relationship with time has been named for most of the things I’ve been
kicked out of.
There! We did it. Now, I’m not saying hippies can’t be classical musicians. It’s just a struggle when
you have one foot steeped in centuries of traditions and the other digging toes into the ground so
you can vibe with the earth.
