Talk about how to promote your books locally
First off, I love writing, but I find the marketing side of things difficult—especially with my target
audience. Kids aged ten to fourteen aren’t typically on Instagram, Facebook, or Goodreads, at
least not the ones I’ve spoken to. I’ve tried reaching parents instead, but many don’t purchase
books directly for that age group anymore. Instead, they prefer to take their kids to the
bookstore or school book fairs and let them choose for themselves. In Chapters/Indigo or
Barnes & Noble, there are so many choices. How would my books stand out? How would kids
even know they were there, waiting to be purchased when there are millions to choose from?
To be featured in bookstores, I’d need to agree to a trade discount, which would make my
books much more expensive ($25+ for soft cover) and I’d receive less than $1 in royalties.
Instead, I chose a short discount, which allows my books to be available online through over
50,000 booksellers worldwide. Since so many people value the convenience of ordering items
straight to their door, I thought this might be the best approach (the jury is out on this
decision). Still, I’m finding, kids don’t usually order books online themselves, so through trial
and error, the most effective way I’ve found to reach my audience is through visiting
classrooms and talking with school librarians. When I voluntarily visit schools, I share the
writing and publishing process and often lead a short writing activity, since I’m a teacher. After
these visits, I usually notice a bump in sales because the students get excited and buy the
books.
This year, I plan to try out several Christmas markets to see if that helps increase sales. I’m also
approaching independent bookstores and asking them to carry my book, as they often
showcase local authors. Many have consigned my books; however, Tattletales Books in
Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, buy my books directly from me. They have supported me from the
very beginning (selling over thirty so far), and their encouragement has meant so much!
