for the sake of family
Family Saga, Historical Fiction, Native American
Date Published: 12-01-2025
Based on a true story.
Set in the late 1890’s, The Brothers Brown – a family saga, Part 2 – For the Sake of Family is a sweeping frontier saga of love, guilt, and redemption – an unflinching portrait of a man’s descent into madness amid the unforgiving wilds of Indian Territory.
When Matt Brown boards a northbound train, he carries more than a pistol. He carries the weight of his brother’s death, a marriage strained to its breaking point, and a conscience at war with itself. A doctor’s brown vial of medicine offers fleeting relief but soon draws him into a darker world where pain and guilt blur into something far more dangerous.
His wife, Milla, proud and rooted in her Choctaw heritage, stands as both his anchor and his judge as the world around them shifts under the weight of change and loss.
From Fort Smith, Arkansas, to the wooded banks of Bokchito Creek, two families are bound by tragedy and love, vengeance and mercy. A celebration meant to heal ignites old resentments. A family gathering ends in bloodshed. And a winter dance turns deadly, forcing each to face the cost of survival, forgiveness, and the ties that bind them.
Steeped in the spirit of the Choctaw Nation and the rough mercy of the Old West, For the Sake of Family is a haunting tale of madness, murder, and the fragile hope that redemption can be found on the far side of ruin.

Raised on the beaches of South Texas, R.G. Stanford has always been drawn to stories that transcend time. That passion was ignited in 1976 with the discovery of Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire, and deepened with The Feast of All Saints just a few years later. Though historical fiction wasn’t an immediate calling, a personal journey into genealogy changed everything.
With no close relatives nearby, R.G. Stanford turned to online resources in search of extended family. That search became a twenty-year journey through genealogy websites, Federal Census records, the National Archives, and old newspapers. Along the way, R.G. Stanford uncovered incredible stories about her family and the people who once lived in the Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory.
Compelled to record the truth of her family in the lore, sprinkled with imagination, R.G. Stanford is a history lover, a research buff, and a passionate genealogy enthusiast. She is also a mother, a grandmother, and a teller of stories, now living near Orlando.

Author Interview
Tell us about your current release.
The Brothers Brown – a family saga, part 2-For the Sake of Family is the second installment in the Brothers Brown series. In the wake of their eldest brother Robert’s death, the story follows Matt and his other two brothers, Albert and Ben, through the 1890s Indian Territory. One brother seeks the love of a woman with deeply guarded secrets, one seeks a closer bond to his brothers, and Matt, forever tormented by grief, seeks redemption at any cost. At his side stands his wife, Milla, a strong-willed Choctaw woman who serves as both his anchor and judge as he slips deeper into madness.
When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer? I have always written poetry and song lyrics, but after twenty-plus years of family research, I uncovered so many amazing tales that I just had to tell the stories. So, at sixty-two, I studied and took as many creative writing courses as I could and learned to write.
Have you published any previous books?
The Brothers Brown – a family saga, part 1 – For the Sake of a Brother is my first published work.
What can we expect to see from you in the future, any books on the backburner?
My next release will be the last installment in The Brothers Brown series. Part 3 – For the Sake of Sanity, should be ready by May. Meanwhile, in March I will release the audiobook of The Brothers Brown – a family saga, part 1 – For the Sake of a Brother. Next, I will write a novel about the very first group of Native Americans, the Choctaw, who were forced off their land in Mississippi in 1830 and marched to
the Indian Territory, now Oklahoma. This forced migration is now known as the Trail of Tears. My family was among this group.
What do you like to do when you’re not writing?
When I’m not writing, I like to hang out with my kids and grandkids. I enjoy traveling when time permits.
Did you learn anything from writing your book? What was it?
I learn so much about history and the human condition. I got to know my distant relatives and
now I feel that I have known them all my life.
Some writers have something playing in the background, do you and what?
It depends on what chapter or scene I’m writing. If I’m writing something tense or fast-paced, I might play old-school rock, The Allman Brothers Band, Marshall Tucker, or something like that. If it’s a love scene, maybe smooth jazz or Billie Holiday. Sometimes, silence is the best music.
Tell us a little about yourself. Perhaps something not many people know about?
I’m a recluse at heart. I can spend days and days by myself. I am a little shy and sometimes find it difficult to feel comfortable around people I don’t know.
What do you hope your writing brings to your readers?
First, a sense of time and place. I write in vivid colors to bring my readers into the world I write
about. I want the reader to feel the red dust on their skin, to smell the jasmine in the air and to see the houses and towns we are standing in. Second, I hope my readers walk away with a curiosity about their own roots, to search for their own truth. Know your history, know yourself.
