Dangerous Decisions
They’re chasing the truth straight into each other’s arms.
When CIA agent Angie Liu disobeys orders by looking into the mysterious death of an informant, her investigation leads her to Jamaica. To get out of the U.S. undetected, she must turn to the last man she wants to ask for help—the sexy, one-night stand she ran out on who just happens to be her dead informant’s son.
Nate Hughes wrote his father off as a drug smuggler. But after his dad’s possible murder reveals another side of the story, Nate will stop at nothing to get answers. And when the beautiful woman who bolted from his hotel room shows up at his family airline in need of an unofficial ride to the Caribbean, he’s not about to let her out of his sight.
Angie doesn’t want to fall for the handsome-but-gruff son of a former asset, and Nate wants nothing to do with the organization that may have set his dad up to be murdered. But neither is prepared for the feelings that surface—or how much they’ll need the other to stay alive.

Dangerous Decisions by Evie Jacobs
The Meet Cute: CIA agent Angie Liu has made an impulsive decision to travel to Miami to investigate her informant’s death. She’s staying in a hotel casino, where she is accosted by an obnoxiously drunk man. Mindful that she’s about to embark on an unauthorized investigation, she doesn’t want to make a scene. Nate Hughes, a local pilot playing in a poker tournament, shows up to intervene.
“Oh my God, I won!” The woman three stools down clapped and shrieked and covered her mouth with her hands. The slot machine wailed, and the little beacon at the top flashed a blinding red light.
Angie shook her head and sighed. She wasn’t sure which was worse. Her month-long exile or spending any of it in a casino balanced on the edge of a swamp. Right now, the spur-of-the-moment trip to Miami didn’t seem like the bright idea she’d thought it was yesterday in her office.
Her current predicament sauntered to the middle of the aisle, positioning himself between the Wheel of Fortune and the Mega Bucks slot machines. He plucked the Florida Marlins cap from his head and rubbed sweaty hair from his brow with the back of his hand. The smell of stale beer wafted off him as he replaced the cap and offered a smarmy grin.
Angie rolled her eyes upward, wishing a grappling hook would drop from the ceiling and carry her away. All she’d wanted was a simple distraction, something to take her mind off the impulsive decision to disobey orders. Twenty dollars or thirty minutes of video poker—whichever came first. Then, up to her room for an early bedtime.
Gary had forced her into this vacation. So what if she chose to spend it working on a case? That was her business. As were the consequences if she was caught. A reprimand for sure, but more likely, she’d be demoted, might even lose her security clearance. Or worse—her job.
Now this jerk stood in front of her with a chubby arm stretched out like a blockade.A boot to the groin wasn’t an option. She glanced at the domed video camera monitoring the floor. She could see the headline: CIA Officer Incapacitates Fat Redneck in Florida Casino. Definitely out of the question. She was already headed for Gary’s shit list if he found out what she had planned, especially since he’d explicitly told her to let it go.
Impulse control had been one of the action items on her last evaluation. Of course, if she cared about performance metrics, she wouldn’t be anywhere near the Key Largo airline owned by the offspring of a deceased asset, and she certainly wouldn’t be conducting an unauthorized investigation.
“Come on, baby. One drink. I promise I’ll make it worth your while.” The weasel licked his lips and waggled his eyebrows. If anyone deserved an elbow to the face, it was this guy.
She eyed a half-empty glass of amber liquid abandoned beside one of the machines. Tossing it at him would feel incredible—for about three seconds—but not worth the complications that would follow. “While I appreciate your offer, I need to get going.” She tried to scoot past him without touching the pale white stomach poking out from beneath the bottom of a floral print shirt.
“Hey now.” He leaned in, his pungent breath warm and wet. “At least give me a chance.”
Sometimes you had to put a dipshit in his place. She opened her mouth to do just that, but her eyes snagged on six-plus feet of lean muscle striding their way. Rigid posture. Close-cropped dark-brown hair.
Great. Just what she needed. Captain America barreling through the cruise ship set, swooping in to save the day.
Damsel in distress was not a role she could fake with any conviction.
She gripped the sweaty arm of the loudmouth still blocking her exit. “You need to leave.” She added a lilt of urgency to her voice. “Now.”
“Why? Wh— what’s happening?” He started to turn.
“My husband is coming.” Her would-be savior stalked their way. “He looks angry.”
The guy tugged his shirt over his belly and gripped the back of a chair for balance. “That’s your husband?”
She nodded.
The man had an athletic build and broad shoulders. His stomach and pecs flexed beneath his plain gray tee. Taking in that scowl, combined with the brows drawn together and narrowed eyes, angry husband seemed entirely plausible. He wore black cargo pants and a pair of all-black skateboard shoes.
“Nemo,” Cargo Pants growled, his deep, resonant voice cutting through the relentless hum of the casino. “What do you think you’re doing?”
Angie tried to send her defender a message with her eyes. Please, play along. “Oh, honey, I’m so glad you’re here. I was coming to meet you when this gentleman offered to buy me a drink and wouldn’t take no for an answer.”
His left eyebrow quirked. “Is that so?” He turned his attention to the other man. “Didn’t make enough of a menace of yourself at the poker table?”
“Look, guy,” Nemo stammered. “It’s been a bad day. I thought spending time with a pretty lady would help. I didn’t know she was with you. I swear.”
Angie moved to her rescuer’s side. He draped an arm across her shoulders.
“Consider yourself informed.” He straightened to his full height.
Nemo took a step back and lost a dirty flip-flop when he collided with one of the stools in front of a poker machine. He pushed the shoe back onto his foot and scurried away. Angie snorted. God help the next poor, unsuspecting woman who landed on his radar.
The man removed his arm, taking the pleasant warmth he radiated with it.
“Thanks for following my lead.” The fluttering of her pulse was unexpected. She tilted her head to study him. A total stranger, but somehow, she’d known she could trust him. And he hadn’t disappointed her.
The furrowed brow disappeared. He smiled, a twinkle lighting up his brown eyes. “Something tells me you didn’t actually need my help.”
“Less violent than my other options.” She shifted her purse from her right shoulder to her left. “So, you know that guy?”
“Not really.” He gave a bemused shake of his head. “He sat next to me for a while during the poker tournament. Kind of an ass.”
