When her son’s new pet becomes evidence in a murder case, scrapbook store owner Kiki Lowenstein-Detweiler discovers that some family secrets are worth killing for.
All eight-year-old Erik wanted for his birthday was a bird. What he got was Solo-a traumatized lovebird whose mate was recently devoured by a boa constrictor at a local pet shop.
But when Kiki learns that Solo originally belonged to Ruthie Goldman, a beloved member of their temple community who died after a brutal home invasion, she realizes this is no ordinary rescue pet.
Solo may be small, but he’s carrying big secrets-literally. X-rays reveal the tiny bird has swallowed several diamonds from the robbery that killed his previous owner. Now someone is desperately trying to track down Erik’s feathered friend, and Kiki’s family is in danger.
As Detective Chad Detweiler investigates the diamond theft that triggered Ruthie’s fatal stroke, Kiki uncovers a web of family betrayals, frozen embryos, and twisted ideas about genetic purity.
With her trademark blend of humor, heart, and small-town Missouri charm, Kiki must protect her family while helping to solve a murder that hits frighteningly close to home. Because when inheritance, infertility, and identity collide, even the most loving families can harbor deadly secrets.
“Fans of cozy mysteries will delight in this charming blend of family drama, small-town secrets, and feathered friends. Kiki Lowenstein-Detweiler proves once again that the most dangerous mysteries often begin with the most innocent questions.”

From Craft Blogger to Mystery Author: How My Multi-Passionate Journey Led to Kiki Lowenstein
A Guest Post by Joanna Campbell Slan
Hi Sara and fellow multi-passionate entrepreneurs!
When Sara invited me to share my story here, I was thrilled because I know your audience understands the beauty of having multiple interests and turning them into thriving ventures. My journey from craft blogger to bestselling mystery author perfectly embodies the multi-passionate life!
My story started in the crafting world. Years ago, I was deeply embedded in the scrapbooking community—writing how-to books, teaching workshops, and running a popular blog. I had more than ten craft books published and was considered an authority in the industry. But like many of you, I had other passions simmering beneath the surface.
I’d always loved mystery novels, devouring everything from Agatha Christie to modern cozies. One day, while chatting with customers at a scrapbooking event, I thought: “What if there was a mystery series featuring a scrapbooker? Someone who used her crafting skills to solve crimes?”
That lightbulb moment changed everything. I realized I could combine my expertise in crafting with my love of mysteries. Instead of abandoning one passion for another, I could merge them into something entirely new.
Enter Kiki Lowenstein—a young widow who works at a scrapbooking store and keeps stumbling into murder mysteries. Kiki uses her attention to detail, organizational skills, and knowledge of crafting supplies to solve crimes that baffle even the police. She’s the perfect embodiment of how our “everyday” skills can be superpowers in unexpected ways.
The series took off beyond my wildest dreams. Paper, Scissors, Death became an Agatha Award finalist, and I’ve now written over 20 books in the series. But here’s the best part—I never had to choose between my passions. My crafting background gives authenticity to the mysteries, while the mystery writing keeps my creative juices flowing in new directions.
For fellow multi-passionate creators, here’s what I learned:
- Your diverse interests aren’t distractions—they’re differentiators. My crafting knowledge made my mysteries unique in a crowded market.
- Cross-pollination creates magic. Some of my best story ideas come from combining seemingly unrelated experiences. Like when I worked at a pet store and a boa constrictor got loose and ate one of our two lovebirds! (Yup. That became an important part of Die, Die, Birdie.)
- Your audience will follow you on new adventures. Many of my crafting readers became mystery fans, and mystery readers started crafting!
- Don’t abandon your “day job” too quickly. I kept teaching and blogging about crafts while building my fiction career. Multiple income streams = creative freedom.
Now, with my latest Kiki book Die, Die, Birdie, I’m seeing how far this multi-passionate approach can take me. The book appeals to crafters, cozy mystery fans, pet lovers, and anyone who appreciates a strong female protagonist building a new life after major challenges.
The beauty of being multi-passionate is that everything connects eventually. My business background helps with book marketing. My teaching experience makes me a better workshop presenter and better at explaining complex ideas for my books. My crafting knowledge adds authenticity to my fiction. Nothing was wasted—it all became part of my unique author brand.
To Sara’s amazing community of multi-passionate entrepreneurs: Don’t feel like you have to pick just one thing. Your diverse interests might be the secret sauce that makes you unforgettable in your market. Sometimes the most successful ventures happen when we stop trying to fit into neat categories and start creating our own.
Thanks for letting me share my story! If you’re curious about how Kiki solves her latest mystery in Die, Die, Birdie, you can find it wherever books are sold. And if you’re a fellow multi-passionate creator, I’d love to connect and hear about your unique combination of interests!
Keep creating, Joanna Campbell Slan
