A high school reunion comes to an abrupt end when the dead body of the class jock shocks the school’s gymnasium in this cozy mystery debut, perfect for fans of Ellery Adams and Eva Gates.

Belinda Bishop is unemployed and single. At thirty-two, her journalism career feels stuck, and let’s not even speak about her love life, which isn’t helping her look forward to her upcoming high school reunion. Stuck working at her parents’ seaside cottage and RV park in Nova Scotia for the time being, she needs time to regroup and come up with a killer story to get her career and her life back on track.

When she literally stumbles across the dead body of the philandering class jock at the reunion, the party quickly comes to a stop. At first, it seems like the perfect opportunity for Belinda to channel her inner Christianne Amanpour, until her childhood-best-friend-turned-nemesis, Jolene Dexter, is declared the prime suspect. Despite their falling out, Belinda is convinced the former pageant queen is innocent.

Killer Punchlines: Five Mystery Shows That Blend Murder and Comedy

Growing up, I was the funny kid who didn’t really fit in with my classmates. I figured if people were going to laugh, I wanted it to be on my terms, not theirs. That and my parents probably let me watch Clue (1985) too early in life. To make a long story short (“Too late!”), humor has been my preferred coping method for most of my life.
I’ve also known I wanted to be an author ever since I was seven years old and my parents encouraged me to enter a short story in a local writing contest. As I got older, I realized my writing was strongest when I leaned into humor, so I began studying Canadian comedy (and by studying, I mean staying up way too late on a school night watching television). Reruns of Just for Laughs, Comedy Now, Comedy at Club 54, The Red Green Show and Corner Gas. I paid attention to the structure of a joke—word choice, speech rhythm, timing, set up, even body language.
At the same time, I was reading every mystery and thriller I could get my hands on: Nancy Drew Mystery Stories by Carolyn Keene, the Stephanie Plum bounty hunter series by Janet Evanovich, and The Hangman’s Daughter just to name a few. I suppose it was inevitable I would eventually combine my two favorite genres, comedy and mystery.
Fans of cozy mysteries know the tricky balancing act of blending murder and humor. Too many jokes, and you risk your characters coming across as callous, possibly alienating readers. But if you make it too gritty/realistic, you lose the whimsical, lighthearted tone readers love. Here are my five favorite mystery shows with the perfect blend of comedy and mystery.

  1. Only Murders in the Buildings (2020)
Three strangers—Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin), Oliver Putnam (Martin Short), and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez) with a shared interest in true crime podcasts team up to investigate a series of suspicious murders in their upscale Manhattan apartment building.
I was a huge fan of Saturday Night Live and SCTV as a teen, so when I learned Steve Martin and Martin Short were starring in a mystery show together, I was locked in before the first episode even aired. Throw in Gomez’s impeccably timed sarcasm and deadpan observations, and five seasons later I’m still hooked. The show is a master class in blending heavier themes like grief, trauma, emotional isolation, and financial insecurity with laugh out loud witty banter. At its core, the show is about the connections we make and the impact they have on our lives and our community at large.
  2. Death Valley (2025)
Set in Mid Wales, this mystery series follows the unlikely crime-solving partnership between a retired actor and star of hit long-running detective television show (Timothy Spall), and a socially obtuse Detective Sergeant (Gwyneth Keyworth).
Very few things can actually make me laugh hard enough to cry, but this show managed it within the first fifteen minutes of the pilot. Whether it’s a package courier reminding the very recent widow he’s still going to need a signature or a detective sergeant doing their best Bad Cop routine on a suspect only to accidentally start reading off their grocery list, it is peak British comedy with the jokes coming fast and furious, allowing characters to fully steer into the chaos. Keyworth’s infectious enthusiasm pairs nicely with Spall’s prickly sarcasm in a classic black cat and golden retriever duo, while also tackling issues like grief.
  3. Shakespeare and Hathaway: Private Investigators (2018)
Set in Stratford-upon-Avon, an ex-detective inspector (Mark Benton) and hairdresser (Jo Joyner) team up to run a private detective firm together, aided by their receptionist/aspiring Shakespeare thespian (Patrick Walshe McBride).
By now, it’s probably obvious that I am a huge fan of the Grumpy vs Sunshine trope, and this show pulls it off wonderfully, mainly because it’s not scared to switch it up. Which means the viewers get to see Benton’s gruff Frank Hathaway geek out over his favorite sci-fi novelist, and Joyner’s sunny Luella Shakespeare getting carried away with a family feud. And I’ll never pass up the opportunity to watch receptionist Sebastian’s never-ending supply of hilariously overdone (yet surprisingly effective) undercover personas.
  4. Harry Wild
Set in Ireland, a retired literature professor (Jane Seymour) finds she has a knack for solving mysteries with the help of a high school student (Rohan Nedd) she meets under less-than-ideal circumstances.
There is absolutely nothing I love more than a woman with zero F’s left to give, and Seymour’s delightfully snarky Harry Wild more than fits the bill. Armed with a glass of red wine in one hand and a copy of Crime and Punishment in the other, she’s the kind of amateur sleuth who will pause in the middle of running for her life to correct the killer’s grammar. Her bond with young Fergus is the heart of the show, with most of the humor grounded in character work, rather than just their age difference.
  5. My Life Is Murder (2019)
This New Zealand mystery series follows a fearless former detective turned PI (Lucy Lawless) and her tech-savvy assistant (Ebony Vagulans) as they assist local authorities with complex homicides that have the cops stumped.
Another fun Grumpy and Sunshine pairing, but honestly, I would watch Lucy Lawless read the phone book. (I’m aging myself here.) This is literally the show that got me back into watching mysteries instead of just reading them. I love it when it’s the older, seemingly more mature, character that turns out to be the wild card. Lawless’ Alexa Crowe is smart, confident, and grieving the loss of her husband, giving her a recklessness that female characters are seldom afforded. It often clashes with the younger, more levelheaded Madison, but their unlikely friendship and bickering dynamic elevates the episodic mysteries.
