An injustice done, a murder unpunished.
It’s Pride Month in Portland Oregon, but instead of hanging rainbow flags and streamers, Lynley finds herself obsessed with a cold case murder. Starting work at the Cat Park, a sanctuary for senior and hospice cats, is challenging enough for Lynley, but then she learns the founder of the Park was murdered and the murder never solved. Lynley’s cat-like curiosity won’t let her leave the case alone.
But why is the Park’s new owner so fiercely opposed to Lynley’s sleuthing? What’s making the Director of Philanthropy grumpy all the time? Who is sneaking around listening at doors? The dead woman’s ancient cat Silver has a twinkle in her eye, but she isn’t telling.
As Lynley’s granddaughter and her beau make plans for their upcoming wedding, Lynley has other things on her mind. Something is going on at the Park. Is there more to her new job than playing with cats?
Guest Post – Character Interview
Lynley Cannon, from Cold Case Cat, a Crazy Cat Lady Cozy Mystery #12 by Mollie Hunt
Describe yourself.
My name is Lynley Cannon. I’m a sixty-something cat shelter volunteer, therapy cat partner, and clowder mama. I’m a daughter, mother, grandmother, and friend who seems to find more trouble than a cat in catnip.
What makes you laugh?
I really don’t laugh all that much. When I do, it’s usually because of some antic my cats are pulling. With nine in my care, there is always something going on. Mab, a tiny lilac-point katten, and Violet, a rotund, overweight madame, are unlikely best friends. Their frolicking is endlessly humorous. Elizabeth, my wobbly cat who was born with a condition that affects her balance, is so cute. I don’t laugh when she falls over because that would be rude, but I do chuckle at the surprised look she gives me afterward, as if there were something I could do about it.
Are you afraid of anything?
Yes. Not telling what, but it begins with the letter, H.
Do you have a special talent or gift?
Is curiosity a gift? Because my friends consider my cat-like curiosity somewhat of a curse. But whichever, it drives me to discover things other people can’t. I even help the police with their investigations from time to time, turning up clues they officially can’t seek for themselves. So yes, I think it’s a gift.
Do you have a secret?
Doesn’t everyone? My life now is an open book, but it hasn’t always been that way. I have a past. You’d never guess it, but back in the day, I was a hippie. Yes, flowers in my hair and the whole bit. My motto is, “What happened in the seventies stays in the seventies.”
Tell us about your family.
As I mentioned, I have nine cats. Dirty Harry is the oldest, and Mab is the youngest. Oh, my bad. You are probably asking about my human family. My mother Carol is still very much alive, a stern Scots octogenarian who totes a gun on occasion. My granddaughter Seleia is the sweet star of my show. Watching her grow up has been my ultimate privilege. She and her beau are about to get married! Where did the time go? Sadly, her mother (my daughter) and I don’t get along. Oil and water, night and day, fire and water, cat and dog…
Who is the most important person in your life?
I suppose that would be Seleia, though I don’t usually think in terms of best and most when it comes to human beings. Seleia is certainly a bright spot in my life. Watching her grow up has been a joy, and now that she’s about to get married, well, how wonderful is that? My cats, though not human, are also immeasurably important to me. I don’t think I could get by without them.
What is your most embarrassing moment?
Recently my family and friends, including my special friend animal cop Denny Paris who usually had my back, sat me down for an intervention. No, it had nothing to do with alcohol. They wanted me to stop my sleuthing around a cold case I’d discovered when I started working at the Cat Park, a sanctuary for senior and hospice cats. The founder had been murdered three years before I began there, but the killer was never found. Well, I couldn’t let that go.
My friends thought it was dangerous, however, and demanded that I stop. They were right, of course. I’d already had a brick through my window with a warning note attached and a break-in where someone
wrote a threat on my bathroom shower.
What do you do for fun?
I enjoy researching my Scottish heritage, working in my vegetable garden, reading and watching cozy mysteries, and needless to say, playing with cats.
If you could change anything about your life what would it be?
Did you know I’m a great fan of Star Trek? In one episode, the captain of the Enterprise has an opportunity to go back in time and change something about his impulsive past that he now considers a mistake. When he comes back from this sojourn, he finds he is no longer captain but a low rank, because in the new incarnation, he had been afraid to take chances. I am who I am now because of all that has come before. And I like myself now, so no, I wouldn’t change a thing for fear of returning as a lowly “ensign.”
Tell me about your author.
Cat Writer Mollie Hunt is the award-winning author of two cozy cat mystery series, the Crazy Cat Lady Mysteries (my series) and the Tenth Life Paranormal Mysteries. She also wrote a cat-sci-fantasy tetralogy, a cat-themed COVID memoir, and a senior cat care guide with poems and pictures.
Mollie’s cat writing has earned her various honors and awards. She is the recipient of the prestigious
Michael Brim Distinguished Service Award (CWA) and the Catalyst Council Connect to Care Award,
celebrating a true story of the profound connection between a shelter cat and its adoptive pet parent.
Her mystery, Cat’s Paw, was a CIBA Mystery & Mayhem Semi-finalist.
Mollie lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband and a varying number of cats. Like me, she is a
grateful shelter volunteer.
Do you like the way they write you?
Good question. Yes, for the most part, but just once I wish she wouldn’t put me into harm’s way. Still, she always gives me a happy ending, so I guess it works out.
