What’s in the Beauty Kitchen?
Homemade beauty can sound a little intimidating until you realize how many recipes start with the same handful of ingredients.
Get to know some of the basics you’ll see again and again around the Beauty Kitchen.
Oils
Coconut, olive, jojoba, sweet almond & more
Carrier oils show up in everything from body scrubs and balms to hair treatments. Different oils bring different textures and properties to a recipe.
Butters
Shea, cocoa & mango
Rich plant butters add body and softness to balms, body butters, lotion bars, and other anhydrous beauty products.
Botanicals
Lavender, calendula, chamomile, rose & herbs
Dried flowers and herbs can be infused into oils or used in certain bath and beauty preparations for their scent, appearance, and other properties.
Salts & Sugars
Epsom salt, sea salt, brown sugar & more
These inexpensive pantry and bath staples form the base of many soaks and scrubs.
Waxes
Beeswax & plant-based alternatives
Waxes help firm up products such as balms, salves, lotion bars, and solid formulations.
Scents
Essential oils & fragrance oils
A little can go a long way. Always use scents at skin-safe concentrations appropriate to the specific product you’re making.
A little Beauty Kitchen know-how:
Natural doesn’t automatically mean safe for every person or every use. Follow tested recipes, measure ingredients carefully, check appropriate usage rates, and remember that products containing water require special attention to preservation and contamination.
