When a good deed might lead to murder…

Coerced into posing as a seer at her small town’s spring fair, barista and aspiring artist Amelia Wethers dives into the dramatic role, comforting herself that it’s only a few hours and then she can indulge in sweet and savory snacks. When the wealthy and snarky Summer Foster swans into her tent inquiring about the expected success of her swanky summer party, Amelia’s not prepared for the crystal ball to fill with smoke and reveal the shockingly violent murder of Summer’s husband.

Amelia grapples with skepticism, anger, and scorn as she tries to warn wealthy scion Phillip Foster that he’s a target for murder in a few weeks. Discovering she’s descended from a long line of psychics complicates Amelia’s investigation, especially when the town’s newest and distressingly handsome homicide detective dogs her every step and suspects her of murder.

It’s a race to the finish, and Amelia will do anything—including pre-dawn hot yoga, adopting her brother’s feral ferrets, missing dessert, setting herself up as bait and making a fool of herself—to stalk a killer.

About JP Bird

JP writes cozy mysteries with quirky characters that make her laugh when they disagree with the laid-out plans for their story and take her on a different path. She lives in Winnipeg, Canada, and hates the cold weather but loves the winter months because they’re a great excuse to hibernate with a cup of tea or a glass of red wine. When she’s not writing or reading, she spends her summers in the garden and her winters plotting how to win her neighbourhood Christmas display competition. They don’t know it’s a competition, but she plays to win nonetheless.

Character Interview

Describe yourself.

Hi! I’m Amelia Wethers. I live in a small town called Hillside in southern Colorado. I manage a coffee shop, Brewhaha, that my bestie Carolyn owns. I’ve been told I’m a little snoopy, but I think I just like to know what’s going on. I’ve been single for ages, but a really hot detective just moved to town. I have long dark hair and I’m a little curvier than I’d like to be, but cookies and brownies taste so good.

What makes you laugh?

My brother Laurence. It’s a bit mean because I’m usually laughing at him, but he comes up with the funniest things. Half the time I don’t understand what he’s saying.

Are you afraid of anything?

I wouldn’t say I’m scared of them, but I really don’t like feet. They’re just these weird defunct fingers. Like, what are toes supposed to do? I get they hold my flip-flops on, and I need them for balance, but they just look so strange. And then people want theirs to be massaged?? You’ve been on your feet all day and then you want someone to touch your stinky feet? Eww

Do you have a special talent or gift?

I’m psychic! I just found out. I was helping Carolyn at the school fair, and the crystal ball suddenly filled with smoke, and I saw Phillip Foster being murdered in his kitchen. It was horrible. Why couldn’t I have had some nice first vision of me eating cake or one of Carolyn’s amazing brownies.

Do you have a secret?

I don’t want to tell too many people I’m psychic. I’ve told some, of course, like my bestie and my dad. It’s still so new and I don’t seem to have any control over it. I don’t want people to know and ask me to tell them about their future. What if I can’t produce a vision? Or what if it’s a terrible one? I don’t want to be the person who tells people horrible things.

Tell us about your family.

There’s my mom and my dad. They’re both retired; my dad was an accountant, and my mom was a teacher. My mom now spends a lot of her time joining different groups, and my dad has become such a gardener. Their yard is amazing. He’s always out pottering around in it. And my younger brother, Laurence. He’s a couple of years younger than me and lives in our parents’
basement. I call it Laurence’s Lair. He keeps saying he’s designing some video game and is going to be rich, but I’ve never seen it.

Who is the most important person in your life?

Definitely my bestie, Carolyn. She is one of the most beautiful people in the world, inside and out. We’ve been best friends since we were kids, and she always has my back.

What is your most embarrassing moment?

I don’t think I can choose just one. I think I’m always doing embarrassing things. Just the other day, I was at Brewhaha and Nick, the sexy new detective in town, saw me banging my head against the window. Then there was the time I tried hot yoga; that was
an epic fail.

What do you do for fun?

I love sitting on my balcony with a glass of red wine and eavesdropping. My apartment is above Brew so there’s lots of traffic as they’re coming and going from the café. I live in a small town, so I know a lot of the people and the things they say when they think no one can hear… It’s so much fun!

If you could change anything about your life what would it be?

Tell me about your author. She seems okay. When she approached me, asking if she could write about my life, I was hesitant, but we shared a couple glasses of wine, and I decided she’s a fun person, that she’ll do a good job. She’s pretty obsessed with things like her garden or making kombucha.
She lives in Winnipeg, Canada. I googled it and it is cold there! I thought we get cold in Hillside, but up in Winnipeg is a whole other thing. She told me it’s okay; she gets a lot of writing during the winter. I’m assuming that’s because there’s twelve feet of snow and she can’t leave her house.

Do you like the way they write you?

I’d prefer if she didn’t put in all the embarrassing things I’ve done in the books, but other than that, she’s doing a good job. I’ve read the book and, while it’s strange seeing my life in print, there were a lot of spots I laughed out loud.
