Who erased the writer?

Winter in Maine is long, dark, and cold, and California transplant Seffi Wardwell is combating the winter blues with a full calendar. Tending the plants at the local bed-and-breakfast, writing reports for the library, and generally keeping an eye on events in Smelt Point barely leaves time for pastry and gossip at Sweet Dreams, the local bakery and heart of the village.

When the participants at an artistic retreat held at the bed-and-breakfast grow combative, Seffi is there to smooth things over, stiffen the spine of the innkeeper, and keep things going. But when a writer turns up dead, Seffi’s called on to wield a different kind of expertise. Then someone lets slip there was poison in a coffee bought at Sweet Dreams, and it looks like Seffi’s favorite source of treats is in real trouble. Can her knowledge of plants save the inn—and the local bakery—before the killer strikes again and tears the heart out of Smelt Point?

About Rebecca Douglass

Rebecca M. Douglass has lived, worked, and hiked around the American West for more years than she’ll admit, while raising two children to adulthood and dreaming up interesting ways to bump people off. Thanks to good friends in Maine, she has also fallen in love with that mysterious coast. Since retiring from work at the library, the author has moved to Seattle, where she is writing the Seffi Wardwell Mysteries. In addition to her Ninja Librarian series for younger readers and the Pismawallops PTA mystery series, she has had short stories published in a  magazines and anthologies. When she isn’t writing, Ms. Douglass likes to go hiking and backpacking, or travels to discover new places or revisit old favorites, including the Sierra Nevada mountains, the desert Southwest, and of course Maine, where so many of the best cozy mysteries are found.

Character Interview

Describe yourself.
My name is Seffi Wardwell, I’m 72 years old, and I’m a retired science teacher. Physically, I’m small and (thanks to a long illness) a bit underweight, though I’m doing my best to fix that with pastries from the Sweet Dreams bakery (and if you call me “frail” I will make you very sorry). I wear my hair in a single long braid, pretty much grey all the way through these days. I love plants, pastries, and my friends, not necessarily in that order.

What makes you laugh?
I think my best laughter comes from those absurd little moments with friends, the ones that doesn’t even make sense when you try to explain them to other people. And sometimes I laugh aloud at things I’m reading. P. G. Wodehouse can always cheer me up when I’m down and make me laugh!

Are you afraid of anything?
I’m terribly afraid of being old and useless. I taught for so many years, which gave me a purpose that I really miss now that I’m retired. I don’t want to just exist; I need something to do that helps others.

Do you have a special talent or gift?
Apparently I have a talent for finding corpses—and their killers. Besides that, I love to teach, which I think is a special gift.

Do you have a secret?
Several, which I’m certainly not telling! Here’s one I’ll share: I knew from almost the first time I saw Smelt Point and my cottage that I was staying here for the rest of my life.

Tell us about your family.
My students and my friends are my family. The family I was born into couldn’t accept who I am, so I have had no contact for decades. Sometimes you have to go with the family you choose.

Who is the most important person in your life?
I’d say there are several. It used to just be Hannah, my wife, but since she died and I moved to Maine, I’d say it’s my friends—Miah Cox, who talked me into coming here, and Nikka—she’s the librarian and a wonderful friend. There are some others, but we can work with those two. They are younger than I am, and I know they worry about me some, which can be aggravating, but it’s nice to know that someone cares, after all. Oh, and Heather Fields is pretty important, because she runs the Sweet Dreams Bakery,
and her pastries make any day better.

What do you do for fun?
Read, walk in the woods or on the beach, garden, and hang out at the bakery! Smelt Point isn’t exactly a hot spot for the nightlife, unless you’re talking about the critters who come out after dark. But I’m not much for nights out anymore, either. Actually, since I’m retired and can do what I want, most of what I do is fun—except dealing with corpses.

Tell me about your author.
Ah, yes. Rebecca M. Douglass, she signs herself. She’s a youngster, maybe ten years younger than me, and lives across the country in Seattle. I wish I could have her energy, because she spends a lot of time hiking and backpacking in the mountains out West. On the other hand, I know for a fact she envies how I can eat pastries every day, though my doctor is beginning to suggest I slow down a bit on that. Ms. Douglass likes to divide her time between writing and travel, and she gardens, but not very well. I could
teach her a thing or two, but she says she doesn’t have time. Since she never became a teacher, she only has a couple of grown kids, unlike me with the hundreds I saw through their teens. Unlike me, she has a wonderful family who cheer her on in her work.

Do you like the way they write you?
I think Ms. Douglass does a pretty good job. She could give me a little more energy—I don’t like this business of needing naps all the time, though I’m getting better. She’s certainly given me an interesting life, just when I was feeling like I was done, so many thanks! And many thanks to you for inviting me in for this interview.
