Every story needs somewhere to begin.
On the corner of the writing desk sits an old glass jar filled with folded scraps of paper.
Some hold character questions. Others contain strange situations, unexpected settings, curious first lines, or plot twists that send a perfectly respectable story completely off the rails.
Reach in, choose the kind of inspiration you need, and see what the next piece of paper reveals.
You do not need a finished outline. You only need somewhere to start.
Choose a Slip From the Jar
Different stories need different sparks.
Choose a character, setting, first line, conflict, or unexpected twist. Open the folded slip and see where your imagination decides to wander.
Pull a Character Prompt
Your character discovers an old photograph showing them at an event they have absolutely no memory of attending. Everyone else insists they were there.
Pull a Setting Prompt
At the end of a familiar street, a small shop appears overnight. Its windows are filled with objects your character lost years ago.
Pull a Conflict Prompt
Two people need the same key for entirely different reasons. Only one of them knows what will happen when the door opens.
Pull a First-Line Prompt
The first time the town forgot my name, I assumed someone had made a mistake.
Pull a Plot-Twist Prompt
The person helping your main character solve the mystery has been quietly creating every clue.
Pull a Dialogue Prompt
“I know what you’re going to say,” she whispered. “That’s why I hid the letter.”
Pull a Children’s Story Prompt
A squirrel finds a tiny golden key beneath a pumpkin and spends the afternoon asking every animal in the garden what it might unlock.
Pull a Wild-Card Prompt
After a thunderstorm, every clock in town stops at the same minute—except the one inside your character’s house.
This Week’s Prompt
Each week, a new folded slip appears inside the jar.
Some are seasonal. Some are strange. Some begin innocently and end with your main character questioning several deeply inconvenient life choices.
A Strange Invitation
On the first cool morning of the season, your character finds an envelope tucked beneath the windshield wiper of a car they have never seen before.
Inside is an invitation to an autumn gathering.
The date is tomorrow.
The location is a house that burned down twenty years ago.
And the invitation is addressed in your character’s own handwriting.
Keep the Ideas Coming
Sometimes one good prompt is enough to get the words moving.
Other times, you need a fresh stack of ideas, a gentle nudge back into your writing routine, or an entirely new direction for a story that has been staring at you suspiciously for weeks.
