She can touch an object and sense the emotions of the people who’ve held it before…
After solving the mystery of her predecessor’s death, geologist Petra Cloch wants to focus on her new job as the rocks and minerals curator at a quirky, small-town New Mexico museum. But her friend and colleague Liberty is suspicious of the “accidental” death of Frank Underwood, a retired petroleum engineer and rockhound who unexpectedly died while hiking. Frank acted odd and secretive in his last weeks—mumbling about an incredible find in the desert and aliens. Was he showing the first signs of dementia, or were more sinister forces at work?
Petra agrees to help excavate the truth, and soon, instead of meeting for book club, she and her friends become amateur investigators. Petra uses her gift and her brains to sort through the contradictory stories and confusing clues as she and her friends dig for answers.
Did Frank’s heirs decide to hasten their inheritance? Or did his rock shop business partner decide to go solo? Petra joins the local geological club to discover whether someone there acquired a taste for murder, because they’ll need rock solid evidence to catch a killer.
Perfect for fans of Paige Shelton’s Alaska Wild Mysteries and Heather Graham’s Krewe of Hunters!
If you love supernatural sleuths, small-town intrigue, and mysteries with a geological twist, Death at Rock Bottom is your next must-read! Grab your copy today!

Describe yourself.
I’m thirty, and somebody – I’m not sure if it was the author or the publisher – described
me as “a quirky loner.” What does that even mean? Sure, I’m a loner, but quirky? Let
me check the definition … Oh, unusual in an interesting or appealing way. Okay, I’ll take
it. I’ve been called worse. I studied geology and recently started a new job at a weird
little private museum in a small New Mexico town.
Do you have a special talent or gift?
More like a curse, but I have psychometry, which is the ability to hold an object and pick
up emotional vibrations left behind by other people. The echoes can be mild, like getting
a vague sense of someone who made an arrowhead hundreds of years ago. But
sometimes it’s overwhelming, like when I picked up a rock that had been used as a
weapon and got a flash of that scene. Not the way I wanted to start my new job. What I
feel depends on how often they held the object, how long ago that was, and how strong
their emotions were. I don’t like getting that insight into other people, especially since I
can’t control it, but I’m forced to live with it.
What makes you laugh?
My pets. I don’t have a lot of human friends, or I didn’t before moving to Bonneville, so I
bond with my animals maybe even more than most people. They all have their moments
of humor but ferrets are especially funny! They get into everything, steal things and drag
them off to hiding places, and wrestle with each other.
Are you afraid of anything?
I’m afraid to tell people about my psychic power, because I’ve had people reject me over
it, including my own parents. I’m coming to realize that the true fear is of rejection.
Recognizing the fear doesn’t mean I’m ready to do anything about it, even if my
coworkers and book club are aggressively friendly. (So annoying … and also sort of
nice.)
Do you have a secret?
See above. The only person in my new town who knows about the psychometry is
Liberty, my coworker at the Banditt Museum and a new friend. I was sort of forced into
telling her about it when I was investigating the death of my predecessor. I trust Liberty,
as much as I trust anyone, and I don’t think she’ll tell anyone without my permission. I
don’t want to be known as “the weird witch” or whatever.
Tell us about your family.
My parents split when I was five, after I touched something of my father’s and asked
about the lady he’d been kissing. I haven’t seen him since or met his new family. After
that, my mother used me to investigate her boyfriends, until she found one to marry and
decided she no longer wanted extra insight. Then I lived with my grandmother. She just
pretended my psychometry didn’t exist. She died a few years ago. So, yeah, no real
family. I’ve read books with a “found family,” which is awfully appealing. But I’d have to
be honest with my new friends in order to get there, right? That’s scary stuff.
Who is the most important person in your life?
Wow, that’s an awkward question, because I don’t really have anyone. I mean, now I
have some friends, including Liberty, but I’ve known her only a few months, so calling
her the most important person in my life would be putting a lot on that relationship. I’m a
loner with pets. Sorry if that bothers people, but it’s the way it is.
What is your most embarrassing moment?
Come on, I’ve just admitted I keep secrets from basically everyone and avoid human
contact, and now you want to know that? The last 15 years of my life have been built
around avoiding the embarrassment of people thinking I’m a liar or crazy if they find out
about the psychometry, or wanting me to use it for their benefit.
What do you do for fun?
I hang out with my cats, ferrets, guinea pigs, and rats. I read a lot. I like hiking and
looking at rocks. “Looking at rocks” may sound like a dull hobby, but I did study geology
and now I curate the rocks and minerals section at the Banditt museum, so it’s actually
professional development. (Okay, I just like looking at pretty rocks and trying to figure
out the forces that created the surface of our planet. It beats trying to understand
people.)

In the Reluctant Psychic Mystery series, a quirky loner who can read the history of any object
with her touch gets drawn into mysteries at the museum of oddities where she works. In book 1, A
Stone Cold Murder, Petra Cloch started a new job as the rocks and minerals curator at a quirky private
museum in smalltown New Mexico. Reviewers said:
“The author did a wonderful job explaining Petra’s gift and included ways it shook up her life. I
became invested in her life easily. Her inner dialogues touched my heart… Ms. Bock has
surrounded Petra with a well-crafted, quirky cast of characters… The author’s detailed
depictions will put you right on the scene of everything that happens. Petra has come a long
way within these pages, but the progress is still new. I am excited to see her journey continue.”
– Escape With Dollycas blog
“This was an interesting introduction to a new cozy mystery series… I found this an intriguing
story with great characters and an interesting plot… I am looking forward to the next book in this
series, Death at Rock Bottom.” – Carla Loves To Read blog
In book 2, Death at Rock Bottom, Petra gets drawn into another mystery after a retired petroleum
engineer and rockhound died while hiking. Frank acted odd in his last weeks, whispering about aliens. Was he showing the first signs of dementia, or were more sinister forces at work? As Petra’s book club becomes a crime-fighting club, Petra must use her psychic gift and her brains to fight through the clues along with her newfound family.
