The Words Were There All Along by Cheryl DaVeiga
How a Lifelong Love of Lyrics (and a few silly songs) Led Me to Writing
I’ve always loved words. I love wordplay. I love rhyme and rhythm. I love onomatopoeia (and
spelling it correctly on the first try). Give me homophones, alliteration, etymology—I’m a happy
camper.
As a kid, I knew the lyrics to every song on the radio. I still do. The only trouble now is… there
are just too many songs to remember. My internal hard drive is full.
So here’s the strange part:
Why didn’t I always know I wanted to be a writer?
The Clues Were There
During my years in the corporate world, I became the unofficial parody songwriter. Any
retirement, promotion, or office milestone—I was your girl. I’d rewrite the lyrics to a popular
tune, print out copies, and make the entire office sing along.
It was always a hit. I loved it. People laughed. They sang. They pointed at the person being
roasted—I mean, celebrated—and I got a jolt of joy every time.
Still, I didn’t call myself a writer.
Then I Wrote a Real Song
One day, I wrote a children’s song with my then 6-year-old nephew. A real one—with a melody
and lyrics all my own (well, with lots of 6-year-old input.) It was silly, bouncy, rhymey,
rhythmy… and ridiculously fun. Then it got produced…with guitars, drums, harmonies—and
even a little banjo—shout out to my late dad from North Carolina.
OMG. I was hooked.
I didn’t know it yet, but something had shifted. Suddenly, I couldn’t stop writing songs—first for
kids, then big people songs. And not long after, I realized that songs were just little stories. The
kind with ice cream battles, punny characters, and picture book chaos—oh—picture books!!
Next obsession—On!
Somewhere in the swirl of silly and sweet, I finally realized:
I’d been a writer all along.
The Power of Words
Ahh… the power of words. They can sell or sting or soothe. They can divide or bring people
together. They can make you laugh so hard you snort milk out your nose, or cry in that quietly
grateful way when someone finally says what you feel.
Words have rhythm. Words have music. And when you’re lucky, words have magic.
That’s what I try to do in my books and songs: make a little magic.
Sometimes funny, sometimes heartfelt. Always with rhythm. Always with joy.
A Final Word (or Two)
I used to think writing meant being serious, literary, Proper with a Capital P. But now I know:
writing can be silly and musical and wild. It can be full of ice cream puns and kid-sized wonder.
And that kind of writing? It suits me perfectly.
