4 Stars
Nancy J Cohen is a master storyteller when it comes to the cozy mystery genre. Murder Pays A Call surpassed my expectations. Usually cozies are too tame for me, but Murder Pays A Call is not your run-of-the-mill cozy.

Personal concierge Keri Armstrong will accept almost any job, but solving murders wasn’t on her to-do list—until now.
When personal concierge Keri Armstrong swings by her favorite client’s mansion to drop off groceries, she expects a heartfelt chat along with a cup of tea—not Fiona Sullivan dead in bed and her room ransacked. Though police chalk it up to a botched robbery, Keri isn’t so sure. Whispers around town suggest Fiona wasn’t as adored as Keri had believed, and many of the philanthropist’s so-called friends in affluent Sunny Grove, Florida seem glad she’s gone.
Keri refuses to let Fiona’s memory be reduced to malicious gossip. Armed with a keen eye, insider access, and a fully charged tablet, she sets out to uncover the truth. Soon her file of suspects grows faster than her to-do list. Between sneaky neighbors, resentful relatives, and tight-lipped charity board members, Fiona left behind a trail of frenemies who’d happily skip her memorial brunch.
As Keri digs deeper, she discovers her late mentor had a gift for extracting people’s secrets and using them like fine china—carefully storing them until they could serve a purpose. But Fiona also kept a few skeletons in her own walk-in closet. Now, with danger creeping closer, Keri must race to crack the case before her number comes up next… and Murder Pays a Call.

Creating a Sleuth Guest Post
Nancy J. Cohen
Do you find yourself rushing from one appointment to another and having little time to unwind?
Or perhaps you’re overwhelmed with duties at home in caring for children, managing a
household, and checking on your elderly parents? How many times have you thought, “It’s
impossible to keep up with everything. I need an assistant or at least a clone.”
In the old days, if you had a personal assistant, she was your Girl Friday. This was a female
assistant assigned a variety of tasks. It’s said to be derived from a male character named Man
Friday in Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe. Presumably, the protagonist met him on a Friday.
Later, a short story by another author referred to the female equivalent as Girl Friday.
Nowadays, this type of job refers to a personal assistant who usually works for one person and
receives a salary. A personal concierge, on the other hand, is an independent contractor who has
multiple clients and charges an hourly fee. Training includes online courses and certification as a
Professional Personal Concierge. There’s even a National Concierge Association.
I created my sleuth, Keri Armstrong, out of wish fulfillment. It sure would be handy to have
someone like her to call when I have too much to do and not enough time. She could definitely
help me declutter my house and organize my garage.
In MURDER PAYS A CALL, Keri owns a personal concierge agency in the upscale community
of Sunny Grove, Florida. She’s delivering groceries to a favorite client and friend when she
discovers the woman dead in bed. Keri’s promise to her customers is that she’ll do any job, as
long as it’s legal and ethical. She didn’t count on adding crime-solving skills to her resume but
believes in truth and justice. Being a personal concierge is the perfect job for a sleuth in a small-
town setting where everyone harbors secrets behind the doors of their stately mansions. In this
series starter, we also meet Keri’s friends and colleagues and a couple of potential love interests.
These recurrent characters will become familiar to readers as the series progresses.
In between picking up dry cleaning orders, planning birthday parties, chauffeuring clients, and
arranging for pet sitters, Keri digs into her friend’s life to learn the truth. She doesn’t believe
philanthropist Fiona Sullivan could have offended anyone. But whispers around town tell a
different story, and she soon realizes Fiona wasn’t as benevolent as she’d seemed. Her past held
dark secrets, and the closer Keri gets to unraveling them, the more danger she faces. Since her
reputation is built on keeping promises, Keri won’t let her client down, even now.
If someone gifted you with a personal concierge for a day, what would you assign her to do?
